I take your point, Mr Harp, and there are racists and bigots at work on these boards and in the country feeding on people’s fears.
But there always are those people, though they’re not the same as the racists who railed at blacks and Asians during the immigration of the 50s and 60s.
What has to be addressed are the fears that many ordinary people have of being ‘swamped’ in terms of jobs, health and education services – including people who write and read these boards. And addressing such fears has to be addressing ordinary people who get their information from the Mail and the Sun.
Politicians are feeding these fears for their own power – that is the disgusting thing.

Surely that’s is the whole point of debate to share each others point of view constructively.
If we all had the same views on things life would be extremely boring. :)I’m not accusing any individual of being racist – not here anyway (though the gassing comments and other comments I’ve heard are a bit different). I’m saying that there are genuine fears of people, here and in the country, and that they should be addressed with some respect.
It’s hard to address these thing with respect because of the emotions that ca be aroused among us all, me included, but I’m trying.
Laine, nobody can accuse you of racism. You made some interesting points in your post, and soon I’ll start a thread on one of them.

there are hundreds of starving children across Ireland and the UK who go to bed hungry, get abused and have no future without taking on foreigners who currently are NOT in war torn Countries as they are in France.
Lets take care of are own, when we are fine we would be in a better place to help others.
Taking in migrants and giving them houses while there is a housing crisis already only breeds bad blood between existing residents and new ones “fleeing” from France.If our social welfare was not higher or we gave the same as France you’d see a drop in number of migrants coming from main land Europe to the two islands on the western edge.

The situation has become so serious that some companies are being forced to avoid Calais all together, adding costly miles to journeys.
“My mate was threatened by a migrant with a knife and his exact words were, ‘I’ll kill you, I don’t care,’” stated trucker, John Morgue.
The situation is now very dangerous, he continued, “they all carry knives, every one of them.”
Migrants target lorries stacked up on the motorway. They slash side curtains and break open doors to trailers to stow away. One night, John found eight in the back of his trailer.
Steve Bowkett, 50, added: “The damage they cause is horrendous. Two of them threatened me when I found them in the back of my trailer hiding among the pallets. The job is becoming a nightmare.”
