agree with most here, particularly Scep, its about time someone somewhere pulled their finger out, i read an article early this morning Theresa May stating people can only come here “if” they have jobs. a lot of British people don’t have jobs, so was that a slamming of a door in the face of these poor unfortunates?.
My only …….. and yes i do mean “ONLY” problem with migrants and refugees is this. most are genuine.
We visit other countries and have to observe their laws and cultures whatever they may be, i know this because i have travelled extensively, and have to pack accordingly.
“some” of the people settling here, expect us to still observe their laws and cultures to the point (and i can quantify this) british people are beginning to get “scared” one in particular my very good friend Maureen who lives just outside Wimbledon. she was walking home from the shops and decided to take a short cut, was greeted by some muslim lads who told her to “f OFF” it was islam not england in that road and British people are not allowed to use it anymore.
it is little wonder that people have reservations, there have been some bad experiences, even my niece lived in a part of London where the road names arent in English anymore. the land and properties were bought by migrants so what do people expect?.
i agree that something needs to be done about the refugees its horrific what theyre going through, i had a neighbour awhile back from Kurdistan, Sunni muslim. he had been imprisoned in his own country and taken to saudi arabia where he was forced to train as part of their army, he fled, came to the uk and made this his home with his wife, wonderful caring loving couple, learned english got his british passport and has always stayed in touch with me, i was even present at the birth of their daughter and was called Nanna Laine.
I’m in no way racist, im from a multi cultural background myself, black white beige brown, you name it.
i still think those in power need to go watch Carl Sagans video called the pale blue dot it certainly puts life on earth into perspective.30 August, 2015 at 3:59 pm #528416fair play for doing songs of praise from that camp i hear they are doing crimewatch this week

I don’t have the time to do the google work which would be needed on this, Trapper, but you seem a dab hand at the PC.
To my knowledge, refugees are placed in refugee centres where they are processed to see if they are genuine refugees or illegal immigrants. These conditions are supposed to be humane (I hope they’re not anything like Yarl’s Wood, an immigration removal centre which has been the subject of a lot of complaints.) though..
If they obtain the right of asylum, they are give accommodation and enough money to live. They return when the country from which they fled is stablised, and then by diplomatic agreement. They may not be able to return.
They have to be returned somehow surely, there’s always going to be some kind of conflict , no nation can just keep taking in refugees. These countries need oil or extreme strategic importance then we might really get involved.
31 August, 2015 at 7:01 am #528418Nations have always taken small numbers of refugees, Trapper.
In the UK, we still have a Polish community of people who had fled the Nazis, and a thriving Jewish community of people who had fled the Tsarist pogroms in Russia over 100 years ago. I have no problem with these.
Do you?
We have to think in terms of the EU n this latest crisis. The region will eventually stabilise to its pre-iraq phase, unless we bomb and plunder them a bit more.
A bigger problem – apart from a government which feeds fear – is the human trafficking and the exploitation of migrants once they arrive here (and I include legal migrants) by unscrupulous British gangmasters.
31 August, 2015 at 7:56 am #528419I am curious, am I the only person who thinks that when someone says “I am not racist but…” that yep they are racist.

Here’s another angle. :?
So what about the lorry loads of young men claiming to seek sanctuary? We have all heard them on the news telling us how easy things are here in the UK if they are successful.
Rarely a woman or child in sight in those cases. These people become illegal immigrants then surely?
Surely they are economic “refugees” & are fleeing to escape their countries National service.
Maybe they would do better to be returned & help rebuild their own country? There has to be a limit on what one country can be expected to do.
Fact scep the communities of Polish people are in the main good hard working people that came & made an independent life for themselves & their families.
I thought we were specifically talking about those that are trying to get in illegally?

It seems to be no longer small numbers though, perhaps human trafficking might explain that, greed and morality don’t really go hand in hand.
How long will stabilisation take.. can it stabilise .. Islamic State aren’t just going to moderate and the US particularly aren’t going to sit back and watch.31 August, 2015 at 8:42 am #528422too true trapper
31 August, 2015 at 9:48 am #528423well, we’ve not taken too many refugees, to my knowledge, Trapper.
We see how it goes with ISIS, but don’t you think a humanitarian approach has to be taken.
Maybe you don’t??
Arc, we’re not talking about illegal immigrants, but about refugees. Immigrants who’ve come here for work are a different question. They are desperate and need to be treated humanely before being returned, though.
Human trafficking takes advantage of people in dire straits, and is the real problem – along with the semi-criminal elements in this country who ruthlessly exploit them. Nobody has any idea of how many illegal immigrants actually get through – some do. Maybe not that many, but we don’t know, so unscrupulous politicians can feed the fears expressed by soe people here.
The BBC calls it a migrant crisis – it’s actually a refugee crisis.
31 August, 2015 at 10:01 am #528424We may not have taken many .. should we ? An open border isn’t the answer, wish I knew what was.
As for ISIS we can see how it’s going, people who can casually video themselves beheading others are complete sociopaths and having a chat with them won’t work, they are bent on dominance whatever the cost, the only solution is for the majority of Sunni’s to turn against them but I have no idea how to achieve that.
