I’d give them a 5/10 for their world cup performance as whole – didn’t have to play anyone with a big reputation – lost to Belgium, fortunate to scrape through in a penalty shoot-out against Columbia and beat a very mediocre Swedish side which included a Sunderland and Blues reject. Alli and Lingard were almost non-existent, while Sterling, although getting into positions of opportunity, was too lightweight to capitalise – basically, an Afro-Caribbean Leigh Griffiths. They should never have played a back-three, and instead put an extra player in midfield, but of course, it’s the fashion now to have 3 central defenders with 2 wing-backs; the way Croatia played, pressing us high could well be effective against us.
