A book on the hidden world of jokes…..
Written by Jimmy Carr and Lucy Greeves it is supposed to contain 400 of the best jokes ever told. I am left thinking…. that the only good joke is a spontaneous one. Most of the jokes mentioned just aren’t very funny. Given it is supposed to explain why we laugh at jokes, it kind of misses the mark. I even texted a few of them to mates to gauge their reactions.
eg:
Jesus walks into a hotel, throws a bag of nails on the counter and says… can you put me up for the night?Imagine if there were no hypothetical situations!
I had dinner with my father last night, and made a classic Freudian slip. I meant to say.. please pass the salt, but it came out… you pri/ck you ruined my childhood!
I can’t smell mothballs. Because its hard to get their legs apart.
Ok, I am now minus a few friends…. so who thought any of them were remotely funny? If you did.. buy the book, if not… borrow someone’s copy.

If you texted the ones in the middle its no wonder your friends have deserted you  … I find most things funny and laugh at the really silly jokes that people raise their eyebrows at, but even I cant see what is funny about those ones.
Bit of a dissapointment to learn Jim Carey’s involved.

This is similar to the old one…..
“Why is there only one Monopolies Commission???”

I personally like spontaneous humour, whether it be to do with the current situation or a play on words, something that is spur of the moment. Instant observational stuff. Most jokes I would groan at, hardly any make me belly laugh, and a few raise a wry smile. This book, I have to say, didn’t even elicit a wry smile. I could barely raise the enthusiasm to even groan, which I what I did when I got a long and rather rude joke texted to me in the middle of the night at the weekend, well that and a closely followed “Yuk…gross!”
I did go and see some stand up comics recently. The funniest parts of each performance was when they aiming the jokes at members of the audience. I guess they have set jokes that they amend slightly so that it looks off the cuff and spontaneous, but some of it must have been made up on the spot.
For the most part, I guess the old adage – you had to be there, applies!
