I was thinking back to other cases like James Bulger, Sarah Payne, Hollie and Jessica from Soham. All victims of third parties. I know each case was difficult, its not really the circumstances Im comparing, but the fact that they all concern abduction of some sort.
I cannot imagine as a parent what it must have been like to go through what they went through, but really am concerned that because of recent events some poor family somewhere will and will also face the onslaught of finger pointing not only from the public and media but perhaps from the police. That on top of a missing child is a horrendous thought.
Lets hope that this will not be the case, but I can see that some people will always be cynical no matter what the circumstances.
I hope I never have to go through anything like this, this latest twist in the Matthews story will leave a bitter taste for a lot of people.
The reason you reeled those names of the top of your head (as almost all of us could) was because the are so well known BECAUSE they were 3rd party abductees- this is so unusual (still)- I still recall Sarah Hogg, Jason Swift, Mark Tildsley, Barry Lewis.
It is the rarity and media focus which makes them so reknowned.
However the majority of child murders, rapes etc are by either a family friend or someone they know- the police ALWAYS investigate family first (or at least simultaneously)
10 April, 2008 at 4:42 am #324445Slayer is absolutely correct. In practically every case of this sort, the victim and the assailant are either known to each other (neighbours maybe?) or have a ‘family’ connection of some sort.
Pretty much the first thing Police weill do, as a matter of course, is to investigate a victim’s links long before they look for a totally unconnected stranger. ‘Stranger crimes’ are in fact notoriously difficult to solve, particularly if there are no available witnesses.
My guess is that whilst Police were searching for Shannon and carrying out all the high Media profile activities that you’d expect them to do …. very quietly and very discreetly in the background they were also carrying out a detailed investigation of Shannon’s extended family.
This is standard procedure which once again has paid off hasn’t it?
10 April, 2008 at 12:03 pm #324446Yes I have no doubts that the police in this matter have actually done a brilliant job thus far (Portugese police – take note).
Its more the public opinions, and initial reactions Im concerned about in the future. Its just something that bothers me, I dont know why but it does.
10 April, 2008 at 1:30 pm #324447Well look at Kate, all happy and smiling away for the camera. Strange I thought Mr King of Slime Clarence said she was “fragile”, she doesn,t look very fragile to me, smiling away there. Well as she,s obviously feeling so much better, maybe she,ll be able to go to Portugal after all and take part in the reconstruction to find her daughter. After all her and Mc Cann senior did say they,d “leave no stone unturned ” didnt they? Oh and whilst she,s there she can answer all those questions, eh Kate?

10 April, 2008 at 11:21 pm #324449What I would like to know (and I apologise if it has been said, I haven’t read the thread fully)… this gross woman from Yorkshire has been charged with child neglect, and yet we now hear that the McCann woman was asked by her daughter the night before she was ‘abducted’ why she didn’t come to her when they were crying… is that not neglect?
10 April, 2008 at 11:29 pm #324450Well sword young children do cry a lot when trying to sleep (in a normal house never mind a strange place) and you sometimes have to leave them to fall asleep. What was the source of that statement? Is it from the “Tapas 7”?
If that were the last thing that was supposedly heard I would have without doubt topped myself by now.
We were having a conversation yesterday in the car about how parents manage to carry on after the loss of a child. We both said you must be able to because others have, Jamie Bulgers parents, sarah and jessica, the countless others, not just by murder, but by illness, like Rhyss Jones a child from the next town to me, who was always in my thoughts.
I can only imagine that you cannot imagine (sorry for the use of the same word in same sentance) it until you actually go through it.
I think the McCanns are being given a tough ride. A thought should be spared for them. IF they had killed Maddie DNA would have tracked them by now.
For their lack in parenting they have (I think) already payed the price.
10 April, 2008 at 11:30 pm #324451No dear that statement was ‘leaked’ by the Portuguese police.

well we all know how competant they are.
10 April, 2008 at 11:38 pm #324453About as competent as an Essex girl on a message board… but this was taped in interview with the mother allegedly.
