It seems that in my area only 23% of the empty homes have been empty for 6 months or more…a sign of the times?

As for tackling it, all the charity is doing is raising awareness…it’s still down to the owner whether they want to sell or rent the property and at what price so it still doesn’t really address the issue of lack of social and/or low cost housing for those struggling to get onto the property ladder.

I was under the impression that it’s a thread for serious discussion and debate…as such it doesn’t need to be lightened up.

You obviously didn’t look at the website properly. Although the majority of the empty homes are privately owned, some are owned by the local council or social housing.

The gov could easily put legislation in place to ensure that any home does not remain empty / derelict for no very good reason.

to be honest and ithink theres more like it than not, i think its because most of us want the best and we want it now, silly house price rises, credit cards, etc, blame the immigrants and yet we ‘english’ forget how our lads went out to germany and places on the buildings to earn better money, the fact that we all are tempted by a ‘better life style’ at least half a dozen of my kids peers are now in australia lured by the life, the money etc, and yet, perhaps we shouldlook closer to home for blame if there is in fact a blame to be made

difficult? yes, return to old fashioned values? yes……you want something, then save for it or go without? im as guilty as the nextperson for taking ‘easy credit’ getting what i want yesterday instead of waiting till tommorow….. the answer to all the probs…..i doubt it but it could go a way towards easing it a bit maybe……

I dont want to copy and paste the long posts about taking over housing but wanted to say that a few years ago , in Newry, a bye law( i think) was passed ordering all house owners to make property habitable in a specific length of time. When it wasnt done, the council took over the houses ( whole streets in some instances) and totally renovated them, to the point of pulling some down and rebuilding on the site. We now have , totally occupied, streets of lovely houses that were once nothing more than empty eyesores.

Exactly – it is possible if local gov want to ensure they have towns instead of ghost towns.

I just don’t understand why it is so difficult.
