The Bill actor Jeff Stewart has been released from hospital after reportedly cutting his wrists on the set of the show.

Stewart, 52, who has played Pc Reg Hollis in the ITV1 show since it began, was taken to hospital after ambulance staff were called to the studios in Merton, south west London.

A spokeswoman for producers Talkback Thames confirmed “an incident” had taken place on Tuesday night, but said Stewart was no longer in hospital.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We got a call at 5.50pm on Tuesday night to an address at Deer Park Road, SW19.

“We sent an ambulance and our staff treated an adult male and took him to hospital.”

The Sun reported Stewart cut his wrists in his dressing room before phoning security staff, who called an ambulance.

The incident happened after Stewart was told his contract would not be renewed, a spokeswoman for The Bill said in a statement.

The statement said: “We can confirm an incident occurred following a meeting with Jeff Stewart, when it was discussed that Jeff’s contract would not be renewed.

“Our primary concern is for Jeff Stewart’s welfare. We are doing everything we can to ensure Jeff is getting the help he needs, and would ask that his privacy is respected at this difficult time.

“All our best wishes are with Jeff.”
