You wouldnt notice much difference if every copper in Britain went on strike.

Crime levels would probably stay the same – as must coppers would rather harrass innocent people than catch all the murderers, robbers, rapists etc..

I bet they would get all the Community Officers doing their dirty work, pretty much the same as before they went on strike.

Did you by any chance get caught speeding once? Only I work with the police (not a cop) and that’s generally the sort of thing you hear from people who think they have a divine right to break the law so long as it’s not a ‘real’ crime.

No I have never been on the wrong side of the law. But I have had friends pulled over because they drive a fancy car and the police feel its appropriate to pull them over and waste their time because they obviously think its suspicious to be well off and have a nice car. I uphold the law every day of my life, I agree if somebody’s breaking the law then it is a crime. I am just making out the point that some crimes are more serious than others. I am not saying its right.
And it is true the police can be pretty useless, and they do get the Community Officers to do all the leg work. Once when a car backed into my mother in law’s car and drove off a nearby community officer refused to help or even radio through to the police. He then told my mother in law to make the 20 minute journey to the police station, and the copper at the desk then radioed through and told the Community Officer to follow it up. What a waste of time! So forgive me if I think police can be a waste of the Tax payers money.

And your statement Johnboy is a typical one,,,,,you might not be as you say, a cop, but you work with the police.

Of course we can’t have an opinion of saying that they’re sometimes just bloody minded and over the top! without us having had some kind of prior conviction,,,,

i watchd a dvd comedy the other night about a pc who is an anal retentive, sociopathic, jobsworth , bully takes his job a little too literally… anyway it was a very funny film, or was it ? cant think of the title tho. do u lot know it ? pleeeeze? i hate it when i forget things. im suffering from old timers disease, i think ?
thing is. it showed what happens when the police / public relationship breaks down. as is happening now. people no longer see bobbies as friends, and neighbours. they live far from their beat , and shun relationships with people “out of the job” this along with the fact that they are frustrated, and un supported. we see them as tax collectors, hell bent on killing off the motorist. when in fact road fatalities rose last year for the first time in 4 years. we see them as pen pushers, when in fact. they have to be so word perfect, and legal savvy. their paperwork is a long drawn out nightmare. we see them as useless when they come to a burglary, and all they do is give us a crime numbe for the insurance. but the fact is. burglaries are almost always opertunistic theft. when the chance passing pays off. we could have a bobby on the beat for every 10 streets and this would still happen. people should be more safety aware. and supplying and fitting locks, giving advise is a cheaper and more effective way of beating burglars. car crime is the worst area, whilst most of us are road legal in every sence. there are reportedly over a million illegal drivers. the police are a necessary evil [as my late dad used to say] we dont want to deal with them at all if we can help it. but the face of the police has changed in the eyes of the public. and i dont realy sympathise with them at the moment. but i could never do their job.

Actually, the fact that I work with the police doesn’t have a great deal to do with it. I’ve always had issues with folk who think (remember that word, it’s key) they know better. So it’s only heightened an opinion that’s always been there.

You may not have noticed either that I used the term ‘generally’ which isn’t the same as ‘always’ which you seem to have read it as.

You know what if this wasn’t a discussion I would of told you where to go a couple of posts ago.

Feel free – won’t ruin my day in any way, shape or form. It’s usually a last resort anyway.

I never intended on ruining your day.

Good – cos you didn’t. I’m on backshifts all week so it can’t get any worse!

I think the thing is, and I argue about this with my mum a lot too, is that I have a better understanding now of how the police operate and the limits which they work within (I can assure you, most cops would like to be able to do more but their hands are tied by the powers that be) and realize now more than ever that things are very rarely as straightforward as they seem. And I do know for a fact that a lot of the time – not all of the time though – that people actually have no reason to complain. I’ve heard folk talking about things that I know about and blowing the whole thing out of proportion. They just do it for the sake of having a story to tell. That’s why I’m usually sceptical.

Two different points of view that will probably never find a happy medium.
