police officer are calling for the right to strike after the government did a u trn and refused to back date their pay rise to september. the deal agreed last month was broken by the government meaning that in real terms the officer on the beat gets virtually no rise at all. many officers contacted the bbb5 news show, bitterly complaining about the hardship officers will be feeling this christmas now they wont get a [bonus] back pay packet. what thinks you folks ?
are our bobbies worth th 32 grand.[including shift allowance] and cheap mortgages through certain building societies. WE pay them.?
do they do enough crime busting ?
or are they simply tax collectors for tyhe government who wouldnt realy be missed if they went on strike.?

They should have the right to strike as paid employees. But they should take note of the postal strikes and the firemans strikes…. they dont really do much good and if you are already skint can you afford to?

You wouldnt notice much difference if every copper in Britain went on strike.

Crime levels would probably stay the same – as must coppers would rather harrass innocent people than catch all the murderers, robbers, rapists etc..

I bet they would get all the Community Officers doing their dirty work, pretty much the same as before they went on strike.

Did you by any chance get caught speeding once? Only I work with the police (not a cop) and that’s generally the sort of thing you hear from people who think they have a divine right to break the law so long as it’s not a ‘real’ crime.

Police officers do a job that the average jo wouldn’t necessarily be able to do (most people say if I were in the forces I’d do this, I’d do that, but in reality would they??)… They are not seen in the worth they were years ago  but years ago the crime rate wasn’t as high. If more officers were to be seen on the street’s then maybe peoples attitudes towards them would change?? People wont be totally happy with the police force untill the country is totally crime free, and unfortunately we don’t live in such a society and that is never going to happen! They can only act on a crime if a crime has been reported and not all do get reported… However if they do strike I don’t think it will proove positive.

You are right. Its a crime. and there is a Defendant. And a witness. A camera.

Ive been witness to soooo many crimes in and around the area I live, yet not one arrest has taken place. The laws that cops have to adhere to are just far to draconian, but yet again to up to date. To be PC you have to have more than enough evidence, not be seen to be treading on too many toes and on top of that tread the current police line.

Not a job I could do.

Have you ever read ‘Wasting Police Time’ by PC David Copperfield? It’d be funny if it wasn’t true.

The big question here is ‘Why aren’t all these druggies locked up?’ Simple – being a druggie isn’t a crime and unless they’re either caught dealing or in posession there’s sweet FA the law can do.

i honestly feel sorry for the couple of cops i know personally, they both went into the job thinking thy would have a good career and a decent wage along with having a job thats never the same two days running. how wrong they were. they both spend 4 or 5 days a week paperworking, and the rest chasing witnesses for other crimes. there is virtually no continuation in workload and there is little or no support if anything goes wrong. the pc police chiefs are terrified of upsetting minorities. [muslims] they harrass and bully the lads on the ground to such an extent they cant do their job. im not suprised they feel angry and let down. but i also remember the police officers a orgreive in sheffield waving their pay slips at the miners and laughing at their desperation.

and quite rightly so. If the stupid miners (led by the extreme left winger, Arthur Scargill) hadn’t launched themselves into a hopeless strike – one that they could never actually ”win” – then they would have been earning their wages wouldn’t they?

No I have never been on the wrong side of the law. But I have had friends pulled over because they drive a fancy car and the police feel its appropriate to pull them over and waste their time because they obviously think its suspicious to be well off and have a nice car. I uphold the law every day of my life, I agree if somebody’s breaking the law then it is a crime. I am just making out the point that some crimes are more serious than others. I am not saying its right.
And it is true the police can be pretty useless, and they do get the Community Officers to do all the leg work. Once when a car backed into my mother in law’s car and drove off a nearby community officer refused to help or even radio through to the police. He then told my mother in law to make the 20 minute journey to the police station, and the copper at the desk then radioed through and told the Community Officer to follow it up. What a waste of time! So forgive me if I think police can be a waste of the Tax payers money.
