Baby suffered 40 per cent burns as mother sunbathed on beach

Police are investigating after a five-month-old boy suffered 40 per cent burns while his mother sunbathed on one of the hottest days of the year.

The baby was taken to hospital for treatment after police community support officers spotted him burning on the beach in Brighton, East Sussex, on Sunday, when the temperature hit 77F (25C).

The 29-year-old mother, a daytripper from London, could now face charges of neglect after the probe was passed to the Metropolitan Police.

The baby was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and was in a stable condition on Tuesday night.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “An ambulance was called for the five-month-old baby who was visiting Brighton from London with his 29-year-old mother. No arrests have been made.”

Baljit Dheansa, a consultant burns and plastic surgeon at the The Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, West Sussex, said the boy’s skin was blistered.

As one of the UK’s leading burns specialist, he was consulted by the Royal Sussex after the baby was brought in on Sunday.

He said the infant was stable but warned his injuries could have been life-threatening if his blisters had caused fluid loss, leaving him at risk of dehydration, low blood pressure and kidney failure.

Could face charges ? Must face charges surely, bloody stupid selfish cow

She should be charged with cruelty, and/or neglect. How can anyone be so, so stupid? If you wanna fry fine but a baby, jeez! Did she not realise or think?

Where was the suncream (or block), and hat, ignorance is no excuse, not these days.

    Bat

Stupid bloody negligent bitch. Surely anyone with half a brain cell knows they should put high factor sun screen on babies and small children, and put sun hats on them, and, preferably, keep them in the shade? Especially in that heat. Jesus it was too hot for me, God knows how that poor baby felt.

There isn’t any excuse. She should be charged with neglect. She clearly isn’t fit to look after kids and cared more about her precious tan than her baby. :
