I was having a conversation earlier about how so many people end up drifting into a job that will “do for now” only to find themselves several years down the line in a career they hadn’t planned. For some people that’s fine, they’re perfectly happy with how things have worked out, but for others it’s “how on earth did I end up doing this when I wanted to do that?” and it’s too late, they have financial responsibilities, mortgages and so on, so they have to keep on doing what they’re doing.

Which leads me to the question:
if you had no financial obligations and could walk away from your current life, start with a clean slate and do whatever you wanted, what would you choose to do?

Lots of wonderful fantasy ideas but, given what I used to enjoy doing, it’s would realistically have to be:

    – play the violin for a living
    – coach athletics
    – teach at university

Sadly none of these are likely so I have to be content with my lot.

    See happy

    :( :? :) :) :D :D :D

    A very good thread this.

I played rugby union right up till three years ago.. To the extent that I had to be dragged kicking and screaming from the pitch in my final days (best tackles I ever made apparently). Anyway, there’s not a day goes by that I don’t miss playing it. A mixture of feelings pervade.. Chief among them being the sense of “a job half done” as my later years were somewhat blighted by injury. To compound this my form when I did play at this time was perhaps my best ever. But that could all be just a little too subjective. I do miss it dearly though, and sometimes wish that the older, wiser head was perched on the younger body in the earlier days… Just enough to buy another season perhaps when it all came full circle.
I believe this is a common niggle among sporting types however.. And must be a horrendous cross for professionals.
I guess that can be put down to a sense of regret in truth, mixed with nostalgia, a love for the game and a classic Peter Pan complex in males lol. These feelings never last too long to be honest, as I’ve my hands pretty much full at the mo and rarely get the time to selfishly indulge them.
    And thank God for that.

As for a completely new departure?
I would love to be involved in film in some way.. Be it the process of film making itself or in the journalistic end of reviewing or writing about them. I do like blahing away on paper (when the mood grabs me) so that coupled with a love for movies would certainly fit the bill.

    A good thread indeed.

I’d have loved to have been more involved with photography in my early days, but spent too much time playing in a band and then playing way too much cricket.
As a cricketer I was far too aggressive for my own good (especially when I used to bowl) resulting in one or two batsmen getting hit and hurt. I do apologise for any serious injuries caused during those days although apologising here is pretty pointless.
The band was good, but we never used to get many groupies which was a shame. At that time George Michael was the big thing although his fame hadn’t spread to public lavatories in those days. If only we’d got a record contract back then things may have been so different now. A spot on X Factor as a judge beckoned I’m sure or even pop star longevitiy – the kind that McCartney has at age 70.
It’s a shame that McCartney is a s hite singer these days though and that would probably have put me off developing a career in showbiz. That and a possible lack of talent. (shut up panda…)
As for the photography – I’d have enjoyed doing that. Who wouldn’t? I’d loved to have travelled the world or even just Europe capturing all kinds of images through a lens. It’s a pretty lonely life is being a photographer, so finding someone to keep me company and focused would be great. I think that’s what I’d like to do – meet someone who makes me laugh and see the good things that are out there. That might just be the key to the kind of happiness which we’re all looking for…

Well, I always wanted to be a teacher but after 6 months doing a PGCE and teaching in schools, I bailed out realising that I didn’t actually like kids.

So what I do now, which is closely related, keeps me happy.

I love gardening so I would have to say……either a gardener on a large estate or a landscape gardener

    A very wise decision
