The “Chance meetings” thread got me thinking about the difference between people who are famous for their work/achievements in their chosen field (what I think of as stars) and those who are famous simply for being famous although no-one can really tell you what they’ve achieved (celebrities). Of course there are also those that started off being recognised for their work then became more famous for simply being famous (Victoria Beckham springs to mind!).
In this world where so much is driven by the media who can make or break a reputation, the lines get increasingly blurred with the latter group being feted more than the former. Should we really be devoting so much newsprint, airtime and so on to people whose only claim to fame is a fake tan, fake boobs, fake smile and an appearance on a reality show or a relationship with a sports star (or both!)?
Meanwhile “starstruck” seems to be a negative thing to be, after all they are human beings just like you and me…but is it really so wrong to feel slightly in awe if you’re lucky enough to meet a personal hero, someone you admire for their achievements?
What do you think?
18 May, 2012 at 5:29 pm #496754I once queued for Brian Cant’s autograph, and I was well chuffed with myself! :)

However, it wasn’t strictly true, I just pretended I didn’t recognise Bryan Ferry, but, the true bit, is that he did buy me a drink – does that make me star-stuck? I dunno, I personally found it flattering! Love his music :)
