So our draconian politicians are banning public smoking from july 1st, should they be allowed to do this?
Smoke does annoy people, so wouldn’t it be much better to have designated places specifically for smokers?

I can’t believe it but I’m going to have to agree with Ugo, all smoking should be banned.
Anyone who wants to smoke should give up the right to NHS treatment same goes for fat basta*ds. If you want to kill yourself then fine but don’t expect me to pay for it.
30 January, 2007 at 10:06 pm #258203Do you to think you will live any longer or anyone else for that matter if it was banned in that way?
If so are you willing to recompense the government in the tune of the billions they would lose?
We are all gonna die, bout time we faced it!!
Weve all stopped going to pubs cos we cant smoke there, what more do you want?
Ive even got to go outside the back of my office soon as I wont be able to stand at the front as it is a public office/entrance.
I dont smoke in my house, I have a sunspace/conservatory where I smoke away from the children/animals afterall they arent old enough or capable of having a fag (yet).
I hate the smell, I hate the cost, but its my choice AND NOBODY ELSES thankyou very much. :?
30 January, 2007 at 10:26 pm #258204Sharon makes great points, as usual. The tax raised through the sale of tobacco products continues to be a major source of revenue for the Government, contributing around £10 billion annually. This is, according to the Treasury, equivalent to almost 3 pence on the basic rate of income tax or 12 pence on the top rate of income tax.
http://www.the-tma.org.uk/page.aspx?page_id=10This poxy government keep drilling into us about choice, well they aint giving folk the choice to smoke, its no, no and NO, you do as we say.
Its a dangerous move, smokers will vote against them, but of course, the ban is after the may local elections…
30 January, 2007 at 10:35 pm #258205What I really don’t understand about all this ”Ban Smoking” stuff is this … if it really is so bad for you, then why not simply ban the sale of cigarettes (or tobacco generally) altogether???
OK so the Government would lose billions in revenue – but all the time they effectively condone smoking by accepting the taxes on tobacco sales, they simply allow the problem to continue.
It doesn’t make any sense to me, that you can go into a shop and quite legally purchase the tobacco product of your choice, but if you try to smoke it – then POW !!! BAM !!!! the anti-smoking Nazis are down on you like a ton of bricks.
As has been pointed out, from July it will be against the law to smoke in certain defined areas / circumstances.
So why not simply ban them altogether …. accept that the Treasury would lose billions ….. and have done with it. After all as the entire country would be much more healthy, illnesses would diminish, we could save a fortune on the NHS and sack loads of their staff to offset the Tax losses.

30 January, 2007 at 11:08 pm #258207PB, the government will still make billions, might not be quite the same amount, but folk will still smoke, just not in public.
If they banned it altogether, they’d have to fund the illnesses it creates, but without the funds to do so.
They’ll ban it eventually, when few smoke, when it wont cost them much.
Smoking is bad for us, but it should be our human right to do so, so long as it dont affect anyone else.

If they ban smoking all together, that leaves an empty vacuum for organized crime
We’ve had this debate many times before – Prohibition doesn’t work.
So, let smokers buy their death-sticks and let them choke on ’em in their own homes, ban them from the streets – Persecute them like the vicious animals they are.
30 January, 2007 at 11:20 pm #258209yup smoking is the bad one!
cant smoke on the streets! so smoke in the house?
what about parents who smoke but go outside because they dont want their children breathing it?and dont dare anyone say that the kids can inhale the smoke in the streets! because you are talking out of your backside if you really believe that the nasty mean tobacco smoke is worse than the lovely clean fumes coming from cars and buses?
