We used to drive to a pub right out in the sticks, miles from anywhere and frequented by burly local farmers who would wander in in their dirty work clothes and their smelly old dogs and which was what might be considered a ‘spit and sawdust’ type pub if it was in a more urban area.
The food though was absolutely fantastic, no fancy dan stuff, the usual cuts of beef but also the cheaper joints that were slowly cooked overnight and served with either a creamy garlicky type mash, or roasties cooked in goose fat and fresh seasonal veg and ‘real’ gravy. The puddings seasonal fruits etc, as well. Not millions of choices on the menu and yet people would drive from miles around to eat there and it was always jam packed.
I am rough and ready so a work meal at Xmas for me involves copious amounts of alcohol and so the food is less important (I still think 17 quid for frozen food is a rip off) but when I have more control over where I eat, I do tend to be fussier and there are still plenty of good pubs, hiden gems, that serve good unfussy food, not at all ‘pretentious’, in “real” pubs.
