19 December, 2016 at 11:17 am #1012022I remember when I was in a London pub last Christmas and I had a pheasant risotto. Half way through the bowl I nearly split a tooth on a piece of shot that I assume was still lodged in a piece of the pheasant. Actually found a couple more pieces in there, too. Waitress didn’t seem too bothered, but then again I think she was only about 16. I wonder if the chef would have been concerned (or if he/she was even told).
ahem, chat host Martin…
having some shot in your pheasant is traditionally a sign of good food. It means that the pheasant hasn’t been bought in Iceland or somewhere. Mind you, if you had that in a pub, some con-merchant chef may have put the shot deliberately into the bird to keep up appearances.
I’ve long learned to keep away from pubs for food, if I can help it. There are good pubfood guides on the web, but I found that they are not that good.
However, when I’m desperate (for food, that is) and there’s nowhere else to eat, I’ve even gone into Macdonald’s for a Horseburger.
19 December, 2016 at 2:41 pm #1012024All these words. Look for a “grub” pub, or .. fresh meat on bone. I certainly would be pissed off if I paid 17 quid for frozen food, in the same token the only Xmas meets I have been, involved shed loads of alcohol. That’s us “chav class.

19 December, 2016 at 5:22 pm #1012028I would simply demand that the chef comes out and takes a bite of the food if it was inedible – I have no qualms in creating a fuss – the bigger the better.
The serving staff usually ‘expect’ a tip so i have a simple demand – good, clean honest food (dare i say ‘simple’ ?)
One thing that pisses me off is that the waiters always come around when i have just put a large forkful of food in my mouth and come around and say ‘ is everything ok’ !

Tom Kerridge is making himself look ill.
I get a feeling Laines comment was coz of Scep more or less tarring all pubs with the same brush.
Nothing wrong with a Maccys D’s either, they serve a purpose.
