I think I have said here before, I rarely go into chat however I did speak to someone from chat yesterday and I was horrified to hear the dreadful antics that are happening in chat right now. I am referring to pics being circulated addresses phone numbers all with hurtful intent.

How people can be so cruel to each other is beyond me. I wonder if JustChat should consider a more formal registration regime?

If people were unable to do these things anonymously Im sure there would be less of this type of activity. Does Martin actually read these boards and is he aware of the mischievous hurtful behaviour taking place on his site?

Maybe thats what its all about… maybe chat sites are meant to be like this?… if so I will stick to the boards. Would be interesting to see other peoples take on this… should there be a formal registration for the chat room?

Message boards and chat rooms attract people from all walks of life with all kinds of personal issues. There are lot of good decent people in JC, and there are a small number of people who do the things that you’ve mentioned and not all do it annonymously, some do it in their own names. Unfortunately it’s the minority that get all the attention.

Re registration, I don’t really see how that would make any difference, there is nothing to stop people registering as many names as they like. If people have a mind to be nasty then they will and registration won’t stop them.

Maybe it would stop cloning Jen? Also it would be more difficult to just enter with a random name as each name would have to be registered with a unique email address.

When I was there yesterday I saw people saying oh thats not really this person or that person its someone using their name… that would stop. I saw a person say.. please be aware there is a clone using my name and saying inappropriate things, gosh that must be so frustrating, that would stop.

It maybe people are OK with the chat system as it is. Could be that edginess and chaotic regime is why they go to chat…. I dont know? Would a proper registration make chat too tame? interesting huh?

Mrs Teapot, I take onboard what you are saying, it may help stop people cloning quite so readily, however as far as circulating pictures and passing on mobile numbers it wouldnt do any good at all. Lots of people have multiple e mail addresses, and it takes less than 5 minutes to obtain one, so people intent on causing damage to others will carry on, they have no concience or morals, however you often find ‘what goes around comes around’, maybe things are ‘coming around’ for certain people ??… Just a thought …. :o

Yes it would make cloning more difficult, but not impossible if someone really had a mind to.

Some people (note I say some, not all) claim to have been cloned when in fact it was them letting off steam or saying what they really thought. I guess it would stop that happening.

There are also regulars who are nice as pie in their own names then come in on other names to abuse, however they’re not clever enough to change their style…they could simply register an alternative name and no-one would be any the wiser.

Yes, each name would have to have a unique email address, but as far as I’m aware hotmail and yahoo have no limits on the number of email addresses you can have. Ergo, no limit on the number of chatnames you could have.

    And there’s the dichotomy.
Everyone complains about nastiness on the boards, yet it is the nastier threads that get the most views and the most replies. When a spat breaks out here, it’s amazing to see how the number of hidden users and guests soars, then no spats and there’s hardly anyone viewing.

Same in the chat room; everyone moans about the nastiness but when a spat breaks out people just can’t use that iggy button and can’t tear themselves away, afraid of missing something. Then when it’s nice and quiet and peaceful, as it was last night, either people don’t chat and go off to do something else or someone will (apparently) deliberately start a row with another chatter.

So it seems we all want a nice happy peaceful chat environment but when we get it we find it boring. :?

I guess people will always be more excited by the nastiness, rows and the gossip, whether here or in real life, after all if they weren’t then the soaps and reality programmes on TV wouldn’t be so popular would they?

    Unfortunately true.

The site makes money (not much, but enough to put up with the complaints) so while there’s no ‘need’ to change things, they won’t.

IF however we were asked our opinions… Here’s mine.

    1) Registration for all. And not using email addresses with ‘hotmail’, yahoo, etc. Use PROPER ISP e-mail addresses to register (btinternet, talktalk, sky, etc). That way the abusers and racists can be easily tracked down.

    2) The website is for 18 and over, ONLY. Treat us like we are over 18.

    3) Scrollers can be stopped by having a set time between posts. Having a 3 second block between typing things in the chatroom will bore the scrollers completely. And if it doesn’t, it still gives other chatters the chance to put them on ignore before they completely flood the screen.

    4) Give ALL chatguides the ability to be invisible in a chatroom, not JUST the hosts.

I’m sure there’s more, but I’m sat here at work and want to go home, so I’m going to. :)

Well that would rule me out, I never give my proper ISP email address when I register on sites, that way I can keep the spam off my personal email address which is linked to my business.

Tracking down abusers and racists is easy, it’s doing something about them that’s more difficult.

Im sure there are solutions that would suit most chatters, its just sitting down and thinking it through.

Have to admit thinking about it, maybe people do not want solutions, the reasons JC ia popular and other chat sites are not might be because the formula is right? It would be interesting to know why twistin thinks JC will never change… C,mon twistin… explanations please
