Ms K, the main thing I’m left wondering about is what liberal élites are.
If they mean liberal élitism, then that would be clearer and would have more justification.
17 May, 2019 at 1:14 pm #1114464Working-class entertainment is very different. Some really enjoy Kyle. Some enjoy football or sports. Some enjoy game shows, or talent-seeking entertainment. Many enjoy East Enders; some want entertainment which offers more than East Enders. Politically many want Brexit, but many are appalled at brexit. There isn’t any simple divide outside the cheap rhetoric.
I’m wondering what this patronizing nonsense is, it looks like something a toddler scribbled on a bit of old card.

Yes, working class folk don’t go hunting and shooting, or drinking in private bars, hiding their skeletons in the closet.
I really do fail to see how these type of shows are funny.
It’s reminiscent of the old freak show circuses. A spectacle where we can exclaim how were not like that.
Making entertainment out of people’s lives, their addictions or illnesses, that’s funny?

Nem,
When I say that working class entertainment is different – I mean, not from middle-class entertainment, but within working class entertainment. Some working-class people genuinely like Shakespeare – I know this from first hand experience. Some working class people love classical music – I was introduced to classical music by a railway guardsman who lived a few doors away in the street when I was a teenager. Some working class people like Springer and Kyle – about a million people watched Kyle daily. A lot of middle-class people hate Shakespeare with a passion, ditto classical music.
What’s the problem? Entertainment isn’t something which can be reduced to sociology. That’s all I’m saying – nothing more, nothing less.
At least the ‘liberal élites’ myth is being given a rest for the moment, but when it rises please explain more clearly. You sure you don’t just mean liberal élitism, which would be a more credible approach.

Yes, no disagreement there. Some people do find them funny, though, just as the freak shows with the bearded lady or the man wit three legs used to pack people in.
I’ve only ever seen two Springer shows and they were funny/strange. One was of a discussion between a Klansman in full regalia and a black guy going out with the Klansman’s sister, along with the sister. The same show had a little nazi in full dress uniform, who liked to wander around his house Sieg Heiling a Nazi flag and singing the Horst Wessel song. Now that was odd.
The other was of the guy who had legally married a donkey. I said this made me laugh, albeit guiltily. Don’t you think this is more than weird. not that someone has intercourse with animals – some people do, unfortunately. But to legally marry a donkey is weird, and then to go on television, on the Jerry Springer show of all shows, and to reveal it in the particular slow way he did, and then to tongue-kiss the donkey is asking for trouble – the outrage competed with the hilarity in the audience, a mixture of both, I guess.. The guy wasn’t being dragged on against his will, or asking for help. He was just giving two fingers to everybody, deliberately outraging the liberal élites, I guess..
I hope the American version of the RSPCA was in touch with him, but it may have been a Jerry Springer joke?

17 May, 2019 at 7:29 pm #1114474but wouldn’t you censor child porn, or live televised dog fighting to the death, or watching public hangings?
Anyone involved in the production of such videos should be procecuted, as they are illegal acts.
With the exception of child porn, I don’t think they should be censored.
Do you think it should be illegal to watch Saddam Hussein‘s execution? It is a historical event.

Not at all, Somer!!
Really, I’m not.
There have been enough accusations been thrown around JC over the years.
It was a reference to the Jerry Springer show on my answer to Nem.
