I’m prob stating obvious to dog lovers, but when its soooo hot I know I worry, so a little tip, besides the obvious ie: big bowls of iced water and shade, I trickle cold water down their spine and rub it into their fur ,  a wet fur coat will cool any body down, without getting them soaked ,  the panting soon stops

And never ever ever ever leave your dog in the car! Twice in my life I have gone to the police because some useless twat of a dog owner has left their dog in a hot car. One useless owner had put a FOUR hour parking ticket on the car, and left the dog!

In Northumberland one year at Bamburgh castle, another couple of doddery old twats did the same. Right in the full sun. Castle staff were trying to put blankets over the car to make shade. I had a row with the car park attendent because he told me to leave it alone. Ermmm…NO. Told him where to go and rang the police. Sorted. Makes me so angry.

Same happend to me Jane in a supermarket car park, twice,  fact is that by the time the police get there the dog could be dead (if they can even be bothered to go there in the first place).

    Both were women.

One had  left her small dog in the car in 35°c full sun in summer…with only one window open about 2 inches.

The dog was panting like mad, I tried to calm it, I see a woman walking towards the car, I was furious, told her she cant leave a dog in a car in full sun, she tells me to mind my own buisness and that she’d call the police on me if I didnt go away (for what, I wonder, trying to save a dog’s life?) ,  I swear I was tempted to punch this woman in the face, arrogant (word of choice).

She got inside the car and drove off without even opening the Windows for the poor dog.

The other parked her car next to mine, I saw her as I was exiting the supermarket and she was entering.

I get to my car and realise  there’s a tiny dog inside the car next to mine, with no windows open, I quickly go back inside looking for the woman, found her and asked her if the car with the dog inside was hers, she tells me she’ll only be in the supermarket for a few minutes, I tell her she cant leave a dog in scorching full sun with no Windows down, luckily this one was polite and went out to open the car Windows and said she’d be out in a flash.

Some people shouldn’t be allowed to keep animals.

I think America has different laws re dogs left in cars.

If someone breaks a car window in order to save a dog, apparently they don’t get prosecuted.

Such laws need to be enforced all over the world.

People would be more careful in not leaving their pets inside a car on a hot day.

You can get cooling coats for dogs, not got one for mine as yet because he enjoys a shower from the hosepipe as much as anything, but I’ve seen them used on Greyhounds which are prone to overheating and they seem to work brilliantly.

    Ge

Without hasty treatment heatstroke kills dogs, quickly and so I reiterate what everyone has said. Always make sure there is a shaded spot for them in the garden and fresh water, I personally use a sensor on an outside tap so my dog/s can drink as and when and I do now allow her/them outside unsupervised because she/they will lie in the sun until they fry.

A rule of thumb is the  5 second rule, if the pavement is so hot to hold your hand on for five seconds, it is too hot to walk little Fido. I personally go later at night when it is cooler and avoid going out during the hot afternoon completely.

    :good:

On the whole I think most dog owners are responsible and would know common sense things regarding their dogs health and safety.

A car is like an oven when it gets hot and if your pet can’t get out then well, to be honest, you’ve cooked it.
