I agree, my best bum-chum Owen. I’ve been watching it and it seems clear to me that Muslim culture, if there is such a thing at all, is fractious and fragmented – making it no different in that respect to any other religious meta-group. We can’t deal with them because they can’t articulate a consistent idea of what it is they want. There has to be a fundamental, secular framework which draws the line for all people of every religion and none and lays down where their rights begin and, just as importantly, end.

I also saw What Muslims Want earlier on this evening. I found the program and its poll results by turns comforting and unsettling.

Emma, Islam isn’t that much alien to Western society since historically Islam was part of Western society around the Mediterranean sea area, during the time of the Moorish invasions. Also Turkey is on the border of the East and the West and has been a significant location in european history. Not to mention the interaction between the West and Islam during the time of the crusades. Then, of course, there is Europe’s colonial history in Islamic countries. So to say Islam is a completely alien religion for Western society is not accurate at all. The West has been familiar with and interacting with the Islamic world for several centuries.

Considering that only in recent times islam has become a number in population, even though not big, and that that religion is always causing bad feeling in society, i’d say it was alien to western civilisation.

I think, that if there was a vote, yes or no, to rid islam, it would be OVERwhelming.

You could just as easily be talking about the Jewish faith in the middle east.

Then the same applies. Both want to live in a segregated world to us anyway. I say ok, get your own little corner of England, see how you live without us :D

you could just as easily use the analogy of Catholicism and Protestantism- history shows the conflict and millions of lives lost in this battle across the western world and lately in Northern Ireland- are catholics and protestants incompatible and should be segregated and living apart?

And you are saying that in Northern Ireland they are NOT segregated ??????

parts of belfast and londonderry clearly are and I wouldn’t suggest otherwise- but to me, Northern Ireland demonstrated what happens when you do segregate communities- the demonisation of the other community, the polarisation of extreme views and the decades of work required to get 2 people, to actually talk to each other.

It will take decades more before the end result is proved to be successful but it has to be better than segregation
