It would have actually been beneficial if Iraq hadn’t been invaded. First of all it would have helped stability in that region and would have been one less rallying cry for islamic extremists. Also, the troops that are needed for Afghanistan are not available because of the need for troops in iraq.
There was plenty of time to deal with Saddam by other means and in the meantime we could have concentrated our resources on the job that was left half-done in Afghanistan. The war has only fuelled Islamic extremism around the world including here in the UK. You also now have a hotbed of extremism in a country that was formerly strongly secular with the clerics and other radicals kept firmly in their place.
I don’t think you can say that the relatives of those who died on september 11 would shudder at what is being done because opinions probably vary and some are probably wholly supportive. My opinion though is that Bush has shown poor leadership and his tactics leave a lot to be desired.

Out of sheer curiousity, I wonder what would have happened if we re-wrote history and the UN (US + UK + others) didn’t invade Iraq. Saddam Hussein was still in power and so on.
What actual difference(s) would we see now?? Leave to one side the numbers of our own forces that have been killed – I was thinking more of the geo-political situation.
Any guesses anybody?
Iraq was a counterbalance to Iran. Perhaps Iran would not now be escalating its nuclear capability had Saddam Hussein still been in power.
14 September, 2006 at 9:49 pm #241165I think that you’re dead on right there Owen. Also maybe Iran wouldn’t be sending its ”fighters” into Iraq to attack the Iraquis if Saddam was still in power so there would be a lot less ‘sectarian’ trouble.

In the Arab’Moslem world, Iraq was a extremely liberal society. Women allowed to wear western clothes etc.
Was this the reason the US chose them as the 9/11 scapegoats? If it was it’s backfired on them (and the UK) big time!15 September, 2006 at 8:39 am #241167@forumhostpb wrote:

Again, it may take several years, however the majority of American people will come to the realisation eventually of the reasons behind this war and demand action. It just seems to take several years before they realise they are being brainwashed.

The result of invading the wrong country has been tens of thousands of angry young new recruits for Al Queda. The next generation of Al Queda Terrorist is here, and the US and UK have created this situation by their illegal invasion of Iraq.
:-k I just find it interesting that American’s are referred to as being “Brainwashed” and Al Queda terrorists are referred to as “New Recruits”. Certainly there is nothing brainwashed about them (sarcasm).
Geoff – American’s are not brainwashed – Just look at the polls ffs. A whole lot of people here don’t like Bush or what he’s done. You’re just lucky enough to run into me, an American who supports the president.
Yes maybe we did go into Iraq without the U.N’s Blessings. But, if some crazy bas tards attacked my family or me, rest assured I wouldn’t go and get my parents permission to fight back.

As with Vietnam, it is just a matter of time before America turns against this Government terrorism and demand the withdrawal of their troops. Although it may take perhaps 20,000 dead American troops for it to sink in, but I hope not.
This is in fact a rather telling point AW. It certainly appears that the USA goes into these ”fights” full of enthusiasm for the forthcoming scrap; bands playing Yankee Doodle Dandy; flags waving; patriotism bursting from every pore etc etc.
Within seemingly seconds the ”liberals” start to foam at the mouth, knife everybody in the back, and generally complain and fret; the media soon catches on and adds the the mood of despair.
Finally when the body count has reached as many as 15, they bottle it and pull out with much egg on faces

As for fighting ‘crazy bastards’ that attack your family, look a little closer to home. The USA is full of drug crazed, gun totting, knife weilding freaks that cause absolute anarchy on your streets. They are your enemy, they are far more likely to put you in a morgue than a muslim! If America can’t even clean it’s own streets what the hell chance has it got of cleansing muslims and arabs?Let’s stick to one hateful American ranting at a time here Geoff. Are we really the only country in the world that has problems?
And btw- I’m not scared of a muslim. This doesn’t have anything to do me being afraid of Muslims or Arabs. What does scare the hell out of me is radical extreamists (aka Terrorists). Muslims are just in fine with me.
Regarding Vietnam, I thought this thread was about 911 and Iraq. I wasn’t around for Vietnam  , I am here for this though. So let’s not try to bring up a whole bunch of different theory’s to prove your point. I don’t agree with you, I never will, so let’s be friends.

I see, so associated stories regarding violence and history have no part in the bigger picture… don’t you just love tunnel vision?
:( :( :(
Awwww Geoff – Does this mean we can’t be friends because I stick to the subject and you don’t/can’t? Awwww Shucks – I would say my lost, but that would be lying. You know us Yanks are as honest as the day is long – right?      :lol:16 September, 2006 at 8:50 pm #241172@geoff wrote:
I’m sorry but this is a debate on differing opinions, whats with the attempted belittling?
Dang – You mean that I didn’t succeed? Ah well, back to the drawing board. Maybe you could give me some hints or something. You are the best at belittling so I would be honored to learn from you.
