Sorry people but I simply don’t accept all this stuff about driving along watching the speedometer in case a camera gets you and thereby putting yourself at higher risk of an accident. What a facile argument.
So what are you doing in areas where there aren’t any cameras???
The plain fact is that if you drive a vehicle on a public road, you have a legal duty to drive it within the relevant speed limit. If you exceed that speed limit you commit an offence for which you can be punished.
I have a suspicion that people object to speed cameras primarily because they are an effective way of catching those who break the speed limits.
It’s pretty simple, if you don’t like the fines & penalty points – don’t break the speed limit……. or is that a bit too complicated for some drivers????
True enough, however they don’t catch drunk drivers, dangerous drivers or people doing stupid things in cars. they just monitor one aspect of the law and one that doesn’t cause a major problem in and of itself.
They replaced traffic cops cos they are more cost effective, they are purely revenue raisers and have nothing to do with safety.8 May, 2009 at 11:55 am #396438As a driver one is trained to monitor one’s speed all the time. People should be doing that all the time and should be keeping to the speed limit anyway. This urban myth about having to spend more time looking at the speedo means less time to watch the road is nonsense, it was probably started by a motoring journalist or some petrolhead libertarian.
The boss of the speed camera company deserves what he got because he broke the law.
His crime wasn’t to go too fast past ‘his’ camera. His crime was to break the speed limit!they just monitor one aspect of the law and one that doesn’t cause a major problem in and of itself
Excessive speed is the major factor in most serious road accidents, actually.
That’s what the official statistics say, and they carry more weight than uninformed bar-room banter.8 May, 2009 at 3:14 pm #396439@quiet_man wrote:

They replaced traffic cops cos they are more cost effective, they are purely revenue raisers and have nothing to do with safety.By definition, speed cameras only a monitor motorist’s speed. They are not and never were intended to address the other motoring offences that you mention.
Traffic junction cameras only monitor a motorist’s ability to detect a red light from a green one and stop when they are required to do so (or their ability to see a prohibited turn sign and comply with it). They don’t purport to detect a driver’s alcohol level, or whether they are driving dangerously etc etc.
I don’t believe that they “replace” traffic police – simply that they add to the effectiveness of traffic law enforcement.
Ther ‘standard’ bleat from a section of motorists is that they are “revenue raisers” ….. OK then the answer is really simple isn’t it? Keep within the posted speed limits and the cameras won’t be raising any revenue from you will they? Don’t ‘jump’ red lights and you won’t get photographed & fined. Is this so bloody difficult to understand???
If you feel an uncontrollable urge to break the law, then you should accept your punishment and pay up…… not whinge on about how unfair it all is etc!!!

Not from me.
My point was about the proliferation of different road signs, speed limits and slip roads in one particular area, and where no one seems sure where the camera ranges apply. Add bad weather into the mix and we have cases where cameras can in fact be dangerous.
But generally this has always been and will always be a contentious matter worldwide, ever since Mr Gatso started mucking about with his polaroids.
I could say that no law has ever had to be repealed or amended, but for this persistent rumour that we live in a democracy and that legislation should serve the people and not the other way round.
There are too many divergent opinions from officialdom for anything to be set in stone. One American Highways Report stated that :
“Experience has shown that speed limits set arbitrarily below the reasonable and prudent speed perceived by the public are diificult to enforce, produce noncompliance, encourage disrespect for the law, create unnecessary antagonism towards law enforcement officers, and divert traffic to lesser routes.”

9 May, 2009 at 2:16 pm #396442drifting slightly off but it sprang to mind…
And I know the smokers in the forum might disagree but…..
How come its illegal to eat at the wheel, use a mobile phone at the wheel etc but you can ignite a cig and smoke it at the wheel… surely this is one of the most hazardous and distracting things you can do… I’ve seen people throw their cigs out the window only for them to blow back in and land in their lap… how off putting could this be when ya driving?
How can you concerntrate on driving when you are hunting about for a cigarette and a lighter and then focusing on the cig as you light it? This whole thing is beyond me…17 May, 2009 at 11:13 am #396443Well…. I got an “intending to prosecute” letter through the other day…have to submit my details to them before i can bore them to death with an excuse they have heard only about a million times…but bore them I shall!!!! I shall start with the fact there are no road markings on the road where I was flashed so can they explain to me how they worked out the speed (thank god I payed attention in maths!) I shall also point out the fact that i was nearly blinded by the flash by the camera pointing at me and that it nearly caused an accident. “shes very bitter” I hear you say…not at all…im not bitter for my first set of points in 26 years of driving…im not bitter as i can no long say to my hubby i have a clean licence ner ner ner….im not bitter at all
oh…mr facts PB please dont bore me with the fact that at the end of the day i broke the law…that isnt the issue here!!!! ………..returns to rocking chair18 May, 2009 at 9:03 am #396444Oh sorry ….. I rather thought that the main issue WAS the fact that you broke the law. Maybe I’ve misunderstood your rant.
If you had been driving WITHIN the relevant speed limit then the camers would not have “nearly blinded” you with its flash ….. and the issue of road markings would be irrelevant.
Sorry if this point was too obvious for you. Anyway, pay your fine ….. accept your penalty points ….. keep within speed limits in the future and doubtless the Kent Contabulary won’t be troubling you in the future.
18 May, 2009 at 12:09 pm #396445I knew you couldn’t resist lol ….unfortunately these things happen, people somtimes mistakingly break rules/the law, the lines or lack of them are extremely relevant as well you know…therefore i have every right to appeal and I wont be quietly paying my fine…btw seen as your so uppity about the law and rules check out your forums somtime and clamp down on the people who are always breaking the rules on abusive behaviour and fine them!!! …make them just pay quietly of course and go away………..(i can so feel a ban coming on )

Yes you were right … I just had to bite didn’t I? Wouldn’t it be nice to fine chatroom users …. but totally impracticable, as I suspect you already knew. Imagine using a free facility but being fined if you break the rules.
Also. I find it slightly difficult to make the comparison between somebody breaking the criminal law (by speeding) and a silly little testosterone laden chappie getting all mouthy in a chatroom …… or a gum chewing ‘woteva’ swinging her Burberry handbag around for that matter.
