Did anyone else loathe school games?
By the time I got to grammar school, my resentment at being forced into biting cold weather in next to nothing (once I swear me boll ocks had disappeared in the cold, I was pretty alarmed!), being the last one picked by the soccer captain for the team, standing looking at the park while everyone else played, throwing the rugby ball at the nearest person so they wouldn’t come for me finally boiled over.
grrrrr!!
The PE master was a ramrod-straight-backed ex-army sergeant with a moustache who wore white cricket clothes and walked round with a perennial smile, swinging his long arms very purposively. Along with other skivers, I plumped for the weight-lifting exercises as they were rarely supervised – I never got beyond the lightest weight and made a point of strained grunting whenever the teacher appeared; back to schoolboy griping when he walked on.
I called javelins spears. The Master was so angry with this, and would jump up and down shouting, “javelins, not spears! javelins, not spears!”. I still remember the defeated look on his face as I shouted “Death to the White-Eyes!” and made an Indian war-whoop when I threw the spear – not at him, I add quickly, he was quite a nice bloke really.
But I so hated Games!

Talking of ‘dance’ – I loved PE blah de blah, but dance (dramatic, not ballet)?! We all looked like a load of maggots gone wrong ffs – I am sure that it was the teacher getting us all in our blue t-shirts and grey nic-nocs! Yeah, must have been a sight!

Lol anc… reminds me of our dance lessons… we always started having to pretend we were seeds in the soil and had to slowly grow and reach up to the sun…..got a bit boring after a while… lots of girls in fits of giggles much to the teachers annoyance…DECORUM GIRLS!!!!
