30 October, 2010 at 9:02 am #451094Jeese I had never heard of this Panda.. alarming really as TB is something that CAN come back in the future.I mean we all must have a little bit of it still..my maternal grandmother died from this many years ago.It was not that long ago I had to declare this during a health test. so deep down they must still be alarmed.
and mims yeah.. bairns eh !! :)

31 October, 2010 at 10:07 pm #451100I don’t think they innoculate all people in areas where there is low prevalence. Not sure why. Some ethnic groups are more likely to catch it so they target specific groups of people. There are some strains about that are resistent to treatment, but they are working on vaccines for these straiins and some vaccines are in trials right now. I think it only works on children though, vaccination i mean. Not sure if it would work on adults.
They reckon 80% of people in parts of Africa have TB and its similar in India They reckon a third of the world’s population has it. Thats pretty bad. I don’t know why they would stop vaccinating children here, that sounds like a recipe for disaster.
2 November, 2010 at 6:12 pm #451101They stopped giving the BCG against TB a few years back to teenagers in school like they used to but instead introduced a vaccine for babies like panda said from certain ethnic groups. Now I hail from Newcastle but for 13 years lived in Luton which was a melting pot of different ethnic cultures, I worked with children some of whom had the TB jab others who did not.. What I wonder is what would stop cross contamination from one ethnic group to another…. The mind boggles! Probably another money saving pinch.
2 November, 2010 at 6:24 pm #451102I was given the TB jab at birth as were my children. It’s pretty bog standard for some ethnic groups. Now maybe I can understand why I had to have it 46 years ago…although just about….but why my children? Second generation born here, I had only been to India once after my eldest who is 27 now was born and went 7 years ago when my youngest (14 now ) was 7. I just agreed to the jabs, new mums are more or less told it’s necessary and you feel guilty if you even think of not having it.
