So…
Do Celtic need Roy Keane… do they want him? Will he be an assett or an hinderence?
It’ll make Old firm games a little jucier.
22 November, 2005 at 10:22 pm #171430I think it is a measure of Keane’s arrogance that he believes he can just swan into a team that (in my opinion) does not really require him at the mo. Many of course could argue that any team could do with “a Keane” as it were.. but I would have to disagree.
Superb player that he was.. methinks that the qualities Keane exemplified in his early and middle career have led to his ultimate undoing in recent times. Replacing his decline on the pitch with a sharp increase in the verbal department has certainly reaped it’s rewards.
His abominable treatment of Mick Mc Carthy (and indeed the Republic of Ireland’s National team and it’s supporters) in Saipan was expertly fluffed over as dear old Roy’s passionate response to inefficiencies in training methods , preparation, facilities.. etc etc. What we tend to forget is that Keane lined out for Man Utd mere weeks before and played nursing an injury that could have only got worse. But such is life… and one’s club pays one’s wages.
But it is not without a great deal of irony, and poetic justice that Alec Ferguson – the very man who Keane ran to like a lapdog, promptly dispensed with him late last week for what probably seems some of the very same reasons – ie Criticising his fellow professionals and manager in a most public and caustic fashion. I would not call this Passionate Professionalism.. but more like a trundling loose cannon that has lost quite a lot of it’s spark.
Roy Keane was an extraordinary footballer. A true leader on the pitch, an immense influence for Club and Country. But, alas.. “cometh the hour, cometh the man”….
22 November, 2005 at 10:28 pm #171431I saw an article tonight that said Keane wouldent want to compromise on his current wages? Hmmm, I can just see the Celtic board sanctioning 90k a week for a 34 yr old. or any1 for that matter.
I dont want him, but if he wants to come he’s gonna have to come back to planet Earth.
I think it’s more likely he’ll sign for a Premiership club who are in deep sh.it with the threat of relegation hanging over them. They could b desperate enough to pay him close to what he’s on just now. Birmingham, Everton, somebody like that.
No way he’d displace Neil Lennon anyway.23 November, 2005 at 12:44 am #171432hen said he won’t play for another english club, his heart has been set on celtic for a long time, i can see him being there, not for 90k though, i am sure he will take a cut
23 November, 2005 at 2:14 am #171433I still cant see it happening mate. Gordon Strachans built a gr8 team spirit, and I cant see him risking that team spirit by taking on Keane.
There’s no vacancy for the defensive midfielder role anyway. Neil Lennon’s in the form of his life at the moment. As I say I still cant see it happening.23 November, 2005 at 4:27 pm #171434he supports celtic so if he has the chance to end his careers there why the hell not, and as someone has already said it will make the old firm games a bit more exciting…
23 November, 2005 at 5:41 pm #171435I very much doubt Manchester City will get a look in, but what about Wigan…. room for one more with aspirations of managerial work in a few years time?
14 December, 2005 at 7:04 am #171436Just seen on the news there that he’s gonna b signing for Celtic, and he’s gonna b up in Glasgow soon.
I must admit that im a bit more excited now. I know he’s a troublemaker, but there’s no disputing he’s still a fantastic player.
He must b taking a hefty pay cut to come up here so fair play to him.14 December, 2005 at 12:31 pm #171437I DONT THINK HES GONNA PLAY FOR A TEAM THAT LOSES EVERY OTHER WEEK WHEN HE IS USED TO WINNING AND WINNING TROPHYS
HIS BEST BET IS TO GOTO REAL MADRID FOR 1 FINAL YEAR AND MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS HE CAN
THAQS WHERE I THINK HEL END UP , IF I WAS KEANE ID DO THAT JUST TO PLAY FOR THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD
14 December, 2005 at 12:39 pm #171438I wasnt telling u a rumour that he was coming to Celtic I was telling u a fact. Looks like he’s gonna have signed within 48hrs.
Whats the point in him going somewhere to “make as much money as possible” He’s already made money than he could ever spend.
He’ll fufill his boyhood dream by coming to Celtic. He’s always supported the club. -
