Yes, but why now? He’s been in Switzerland and numerous other countries that can extradite for the last 30 years.
Good point. I think that it is because he has been living (i.e. domiciled) in France most of the time and of course he is a French (and Polish) national.
Apparently a number of attempts have been made to extradite him from France but typically the French have done nothing about it.
The US authorities had advance notice of his visit to Switzerland and arranged for a fresh extradition request to be sent to the Swiss, to await the nonce as soon as he crosed the border.
1 October, 2009 at 7:02 am #417963The timing is indeed curious. Though apparently on the “Wanted List” for decades, Polanski has travelled with quite a deal of “.. transparency across Europe” in this time – hoovering up award gongs et al in the process.
Methinks any political manoeuvering that may have kept him sweet throughout this time has finally turned sour, and, like all such sideshows, the bargaining buffer now becomes political punchbag.Be that as it may (and regardless of these or any such insidious motives purported by those who condemn the decision to detain him), justice must be served. The time elapsed or the renown in which his work is held should in no way make up for or expunge Polanski’s nefarious activities of the past, for which he was convicted of by a court of law.
With this regard, to see some of the names appearing on lists petitioning for his release puzzles and disappoints me (not unless they know something we don’t with regard to his conviction? I somehow think not).Yes, a truly gifted, artistic genius. A visionary creator of films that most directors can only dream of. A man with an horrific personal past of tragedy and destruction that is well documented, and indeed dealt with in his work. Yet despite (and indeed in many ways because of) this, it is no less crucial now than it was thirty years ago that he be held accountable for his crime and finally accept his conviction and adhere to any future rulings with regard to the case.
7 October, 2009 at 9:44 am #417964I wonder about all those pop artists who used the term ‘little girl’ as a term of enderment in their songs up to about the 1970’s. They wouldn’t get away with it now!
8 October, 2009 at 3:38 pm #417965True. How about the song titled “You’re Sixteen” by Johnny Burnette? the main lyric is “You’re sisteen, you’re beautiful and you’re mine”
Today this sounds somewhat like a paedophile anthemn eh?
8 October, 2009 at 3:39 pm #417966or even an anthem
8 October, 2009 at 8:25 pm #417967Great film-maker but a flawed human being surrounded by deep tragedy.
Weren’t both Sharon Tate and Natassia Kinski only 15 when he started relationships with them ?
8 October, 2009 at 8:42 pm #417968A nonce case is a nonce case thats not flawed in my opinion just a nonce
13 July, 2010 at 1:37 pm #417969Well well…..Switzerland yesterday decided there was “no legal reason” why Roman Polanski should be handed over to the USA.
Not only did he admit to having sex with a 13 yr old but he sedated her before the act!
What a joke. -
