I see people on here moaning about why the need their cars. Its all rubbish, if you live in a town or city, you don’t need a car.
If you live in the middle of no where you do.
Business users will always pass on the cost of any rise to the customer.
You can moan about the roads and the cost of running a car, but I am sure that most of you could and should live without one.
I think “bat” not letting her kids walk a mile to school sums it up.
28 May, 2008 at 10:52 pm #338734There is a wonderful irony in all this. For the last while Governments / politicians have been berating us with lectures about ‘global warming’ and ‘carbon footprints’ as a way to ‘save the planet’.
Their preferred method to achieve this aim – which allegedly EVERYBODY supports (oh yes … really???) – is to raise taxes on anything even remotely connected with increased carbon output. The so-called Green Taxes.
This they say will encourage the general populace to use less carbon emitting products and assist in ‘saving the planet’.
OK so now fuel prices are at an all time high and vehicle tax is also due to go up enormously. Suddenly everybody is moaning like crazy. Why???
Unless of course you think that “Green Taxes” are just another way for the Government to claw money out of our pockets and spend it on anything but reducing global warming…. and of course they’d never do that would they???????

The growth in the “school run” has exploded in the last 20 years, people having 2 cars has grown.
I live near a school and it’s a nightmare during the morning and afternoon school rush.
There are cars everywhere and I agree about your point of there being too many cars per family.29 May, 2008 at 7:52 pm #338738@sir Actor wrote:

The thing about fuel prices is that they are far removed from the world price of oil, and indeed the world price of petrol; most of the cost in the UK, around 70% of it is tax or duty.
It is unfair to penalise everyone- the rich (who don’t care about spending an extra £20 a week on fuel) and the poorest families who simlpy have no alternative but to drive.
Its not about reducing car use, or greenhouse gas emissions, its mostly to make the inland revenue money.
You won’t tax the motorist of the roads because in many cases there is no alternative. Some people have no access to buses, particularly in rural areas, and trains, well they are often more expensive than actually driving to your destination.
People are caught in a trap they can’t get out of.
Of course, in years past, people worked much closer to home, and indeed, a little longer ago, most women didnt work, so they had no need for a car everyday.
