How many accidents are caused by drivers talking on their mobile phones whilst driving? The answer is too many.
Is the government doing enough to stop this? Are drivers learning from their mistakes and using alternative methods? ie, not a hand held mobile.
Back in early December I read that drivers are now being fined for using a hand held mobile phone while driving. Do you think this is right?
I certainly do, after all anything that takes your attention of the road whether it be talking to a friend on the phone or just having the radio turned up to load is a bad thing. Lack of attention causes accidents and costs innocent people their lives. Why should somebody die just because you feel like gossiping? Why should somebody die because you want to sing along to Girls Aloud on the radio and not watch what you are doing.
Other distractions according to research done by the Government shows that smoking can also be a distraction while driving, and also map reading. Eating and drinking at the wheel is seen as a huge distraction as it takes your concentration away from the road as the driver will be focusing it on their food/drink even if it by for only a few seconds. Every second counts right?
What are your views on this? Should more be done? Can more be done? Is driving and talking on your mobile phone or eating and drinking while driving no big deal to you?
Or do you agree it could ultimately cost somebody their life? Should drivers face a instant ban if they are caught using a mobile phone?Your comments please….
6 February, 2008 at 8:04 am #309967I find sex whilst driving somewhat distracting :)
6 February, 2008 at 10:07 am #309968Slayer is of course perfectly correct – sex IS at the root of this issue.
Men, when they use a mobile as they drive tend to use a Bluetooth device that enables hands-free communication.
Women on the other hand tend to try to drive one-handed, with the other holding their mobile “yapping-device” pressed into their ear.
Men tend to receive calls whilst driving, and stop to make them…… women tend to both make and receive calls without bothering themselves to stop.
Men use their mobiles for important (usually business connected) calls …… women have an almost insane need to gossip. they seem not to be able to simply have a mobile available to them without wanting to call up one of their numerous ‘friends’ to natter about – well – nothing really.
Generally men don’t text much and certainly not when driving ….. women can’t seem to help themselves and text incessantly.
So sex IS at the root of this problem and the only way to overcome it is to have a system of differential punishments.
Men get a fine or an endorsement …. women get disqualified instantly and repeat female offenders have their jaws wired together and forced to wear boxing gloves.
6 February, 2008 at 11:11 am #309969Most companies are taking “hand free” sets out of their vans and cars.
The main problem with them is that the “bluetooth” systems run the head sets down in about 5 hours.
We have had a problem with trying to find a working system for sometime.
The other problem we have found is that people forget to take off their head sets when they leave the van and bend over and lose them.
I think we have replaced about 50 in the last year.
We have had a problem with trying to find a working system for sometime.
No matter how much we look for a technology answer, right now there seems to be nothing on the market that works and is robust enough to work.
Now the advice is turn off all phones when you get in a van, but if your stuck in traffic for 2 hours, you need to call the customer or office and let them know why you are late.
I know on Monday when I was coming back from Hook, the “hands free kit” packed up on the M25 and my phone was ringing so much, I had to answer it because it was driving me nuts.
I think if you are only on the road for a few hours a day, there no need for anyone to use there phone while driving, but if you are working out of a van and your on the road for 12 hours a day, you have little choice.
Over all I would say most people who have accidents are the ones who don’t stick to the speed limits, which feel 20 miles per hour in a town is too slow and 70 miles per hour on a motorway is a minimal speed.

Spending an extra ordinarily larger amount of time here Hoseason, quite unusual for you, considering you aren’t deleting posts.
Wonder why….
