    #1089724

Did you mean ” The Theory of Everything ” ?

The Theory of Everything is a 2014 British biographical romantic drama film which is set at Cambridge University and details the life of the theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. It was directed by James Marsh[ and adapted by Anthony McCarten from the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen by Jane Hawking, which deals with her relationship with her ex-husband, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or motor neurone disease), and his success in physics

The film stars Eddie Redmayne[1] with Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, Christian McKay, Harry Lloyd, and David Thewlis featured in supporting roles.[1] The film had its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on 7 September 2014. It had its UK premiere on 1 January 2015

The film received positive reviews, with praise for the musical score, cinematography, and the performance of Felicity Jones and especially Eddie Redmayne, which earned him nominations for a variety of accolades in award shows and film festivals; including winning the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film also received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress for Jones, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score for Jóhannsson. The film received ten British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) nominations; and won Outstanding British Film, Best Leading Actor for Redmayne, and Best Adapted Screenplay for McCarten. Did God spare him?

The NHS and advances in medicine kept him alive, Sceptical. No doubt alongside his own personal courage and incredible will to live. ‘God’ doesn’t enter the equation. Also you keep misquoting him out of context to suit your stance. I am not impressed at all. “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”

Yes, I know he was kept alive by a lot of money spent on him.

I feel an unfair resentment at that because of my friend. Motor neurone disease is realty horrible. To watch a victim progress towards death is upsetting enough; to endure the disease must be beyond thinking about. But I am being very unfair.  The guy was pretty amazing in his achievement.

Taking the quotation out of context.

    Guilty as charged, Gerry.

But it wasn’t deliberate, believe it or not. I glanced over the comment, and forgot teh second half. I don’t know why; partly because I don’t give it the same credence as he does? partly because I just overlooked it? But you’re right to point it out.

I don’t know if there’s a life after death, though the house of Lords was always said to be proof. I’m living on the assumption that there isn’t one. It would be very nice if there were a Heaven where I once again met people dear to me who are dead. I really don’t believe that some sort of divine justice will take place on death – that all the nasty people will get their come-uppance, and I will get rewarded with lots of coffee cake. That’s not the nature of my Christianity. Not orthodox, am I?

This post is contradictory , you state you are living on the assumption there is no afterlife but claim to be a Christian? If you aren’t “orthodox ” in these basic views then by definition you can’t be a Christian.

you are like Dawkins; you are ignorant of modern religious belief.

many Christians are biblical literalists. Most have to sift the bible, causing mockery forom those like Dawkins and yourself who want them to stick to something genuinelyfoolish.

Many Christians now deny the actual Resurrection (a Bishop of Durham did, was it David Jenkins or his predecessor?). Some Christians have argued that god is dead. many, many Christian deny heaven – they believe that our souls fall asleep in hope of the Second Coming – see Tom Wright’s book on Resurrection. Catholics believe in Heaven, but not all.

You are the last person to assess whether someone is a Christian or not. Your posts drip with contempt about Christianity. Perhaps at some point they’ll show some knowledge as well.

Hate to say it Sceppers mate, but its starting to look a little like resentment that someone SO  admired by so many, for whatever reasons, ie: if he brought understanding to so many young students it really doesn’t matter if they thought of him as some sort of super human, and of course he’d lap it up, he was making what many people don’t even try to understand more understandable, because  his views on God differ so greatly with yours, that you are trying discredit him slightly, I bit like ” Meh…. he wasn’t all that …. ”  when of course we all know He Was All That. I know you will disagree, I’m just saying it’s the feeling I’m getting here…

    Sorry.

    I’m surprised you watched it

    #1089732

In MY opinion it wasn’t a cheesy film nor was it a cheesy book, but then that’s my opinion which doesn’t in anyway compare with YOUR opinion. It was well acted and I found it interesting and received far more accolades than just an Oscar or didn’t you read it all. I enjoyed it, that must make me a reallll thicko, sorry about that Sir.

Jim bowen died on the same day and he was much more clever than hawkins

    #1089738

I saw the film, thought it was wonderful…

Only a fool would deny that Hawkins was a genius.

His research, his tenacity, his theories, his brilliance will be remembered long after we are all gone.

As a side note.. his last two wives were Christian.

(Rude… 40% of scientists believe in God. I will find the source for that but saw it somewhere)
