I didn’t mock Hawkins, Gerry. Quite the opposite That myth was dispelled early in the thread.a while ago.

Yes you did. No it wasn’t, just because you say so, now. Blinking font has gone clear, you’re not educated enough to a high enough standard, to have an educated opinion about Hawkins work. Not a personal attack, just the cold hard brutal truth…

    Typical of jc.

I would never mock anyone with motor neurone disease.

I’ve seen its effects on someone close to me; what she and he went through is beyond my imagining. I’ve stated this clearly.

I’m educated enough to have read through several books on cosmology, including Hawkin’s (unlike you, I get the name right).

But true, I’m not a cosmologist.

Waiting for someone like you, Gerry, to enlighten me a little by pointing to his lasting effect on science, other than the ones I’l already started.

of course, it’s easier to do a jc stir-up than it is to deal wiht serious questions, isn’t it?

    But I live in hope.

What Stephen Hawking’s great legacy is, is that he was the greatest communicator of his day, in his field. He was able to bring the very complex world of Cosmology, Astronomy, Astro- Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Space and Time, and many other branches of Science, into quite simplistic layman’s terms. With his best seller A Brief History of Time, he was the leading light of his era, and ours. His book has been an eye opener and great help for millions of people who aren’t educated enough to even begin to take on these subjects and ideas, to begin to understand, due to his communication skills. His greatest achievements and his awards are based in communication and writing as much as Science.

Yes, these are the points already made.

He was the first to establish his own branch of science in the popular imagination.

He also showed great courage in meeting his disability.

I don’t think he has made a contribution on the level of other cosmologists of the century – not just Einstein, but people like Edwin Hubble (Big Bang) or the teams who developed thinking on dark matter and dark energy.

That is NOT to deny his intellectual ability. His investiagtion of black holes was unfinished when he died. maybe they’ll lead to something important.

If anyone is interested in pursuing this, I can recommend Unravelling the Mysteries of the Invisible Universe by Jeremiah Ostriker (a leading astrophysicist).

Helge Kragh’s Cosmology and Controversy is on my reading list – it’s an accepted account of the clash between the two competing theories of the nature of the universe – the Big Bang and the Steady State.

    Nemesis,

you’re too defensive against these characters.

They shout out their beliefs, often in crude personal abuse, but it disguises their actual ignorance.

In the discussion of the origins of the universe, he Big bang was described by Pope Pius as being a theory compatible with Christianity. He said that if the Steady State theory were right, then this would be a triumph for atheism.

The steady state theory was discredited.

Most scientists in the poll quoted by rudeboy were against creationsim, but so am I. Creationism is held only by biblical literalists, who are also bigoted in theior approach to the universe. It stresses that the world was created in 4004 BC in seven days, and denies evolution.

Dawkins and his ilk always claim that all Christians are creationists, or dishonest.

Pish. I am not a creationist. I still hold that the universe was created. The argument is out on that.

I seem to remember that Hawkin claimed that before the big bang, he was trying to show that there was no space and time. That is a Christian view, too.

You read a book or two and then try suggesting you are familiar with the subject. Whatever the subject is I might add. You’re not qualified in any way, shape or form, to suggest Hawkins is this or that. You brought his disability into it and as others have already stated, posted his pic. Mocking him and all his achievements by suggesting stupidly, that he was more interested in celebrity and which you read somewhere or other online, just like I did and no doubt others…

You then state he is inferior to the “geniuses” of your choice and demand we prove otherwise. That’s not how science works. You prove your thesis, you made the claim.

You keep waffling on about “serious” issues, do you forget what you type on these sort of threads, because a lot of it is provocative and I happen to recall you going off on one, when we dared question your assertions about the death of Jo Cox. Practice what you preach and people might respond to you differently.

Hi Nem, no need for an apology but thank you anyway, I was probably being a little snitty  and defensive as I can’t abide people who show off and name drop believing anyone who hasn’t read books on every philosopher are dimwits and have to be spoken to like children ( not you by the way lol ). Some of us do ‘real work’. Anyway I digress, as I have mentioned many times now, I have no problem with anyone having a faith in God, any God, but me, in my life, with my experiences, do not believe.

Now this ‘character’ is going to go and work harder at disguising my ignorance…..

Well  I’m truly sorry for being a whinger here  but the more something plays in my mind……

    How dare you ?

    How actually dare you ?

No  I don’t have a nominated day to sit and read, I have been out tonight trying to drive in a blizzard ,  trying to care for people truly in need  ( I have footage on my phone if you don’t believe me )  it was scary but what can you do  ?  It is and has been my job for many years  I’ve become very close to many patients with varying illnesses and also gone through the devastation of losing loved ones ,as have many, You aren’t alone there are you ?  I haven’t been reading up on my argument . I’m terribly sorry no one seems to come up to your standard of expertise on ‘most ‘ subjects, but to call me and some others ‘ignorant characters” is nasty and arrogant.

    Disgusted

    Gerry and Ms Mooosey

Gerry, there was something in one of the points you made earlier which had the ring of truth. I felt bad about it, and I was going to apologise.

But it’s so wrapped up in the scattergun array of accusations that I’ll make my apology elsewhere.

Sorry for not being a scientist. I am trying to make serious points from the point of view of a non-scientist attempting to make sense of an important topic. I don’t think anyone else here is a scientist, either, from what I see, so we’re all pretty much in the same boat. The Kingdom of the blind, with one person attempting to debunk a myth held by the others, – tentatively.

I’m not even going to start dealing with other points made, especially the jo Cox one. I remember that time only too well, Gerry, but it was 2 years ago.

Ms Mooosey, I’ve often come across sententious rants in jc and I ignore them.

Yours I won’t ignore, paradoxically because I actually have a lot of respect for you. That you’ve lost any respect you had for me is obvious…

So your rant had the intended effect – of both upsetting and angering me. As you’re obviously upset and angry as well, then I guess that’s deserved in some way.

So, I’ll answer you, probably later today, even if you don’t want me to. Then I hope it’s finished for me at least.

Christopher Reeve wasn’t a particular Scientist but he showed great courage in the light of his great horse riding accident. If i recall correctly…Steven Hawkings published his book out of financial necessity. Christopher Reeve did a similar thing though…..starred in a remake of Rear Window.

All I can say really is that we are all entitled to our beliefs.

Moosey, we may disagree on our veiws about God but that is what makes life interesting. I have no problem with your lack of belief and have never felt you disrespect mine. I actually like discussingopposing veiws, I think we can all learn something from differing stances.

Scep… Im not sure what my creation stance is, other than there is something, some entity, behind all this. Progressive creationism springs to mind. Genesis describes the Big Bang, and evolution, or at least alludes to it.

In fairness to rudeboy, he is hardly going to quote a Christian scientist to back his argument, is he, any more than I’d quote an atheist one.

I like being challenged, even if I dont have the answers and have not taken offence with anything posted.
