I’ve been waiting for the final list, but it’s not coming for sometime.

Nobody else is putting it up so I will.

Rest in peace, the victims of the horrific fire whihc consumed the high-rise estate of Grenfell Tower in Kensington.

There are 12 dead counted, but many remain unaccounted for.

There were a lot of kids trapped in that building. One of the charred remnants was a school homework book. many people were jumping form the top floor, on fire. Kids were being thrown out of the windows, to be caught by people below. The pictures show people screaming for help, while trapped.

I don’t know what caused the building to go up in flames so fast, but there was an estate group which has been warning of a fire risk for quite a while. A multi-million pound refurbishment was spent not long ago, and I’m hoping Kensington Council wasn’t hiring the cheapest contractor, who cut corners.

These are among the poorest people in Kensington. People wondered why Kensington went Labour last week, but the constituency contains large pockets of poor people such as these behind the wealth.

I was horrified when I first came to jc about the callous and contemptuous attitude shown to the poorest people in our society. There was a lot of status-boasting.

But my heart goes out to these people and their neighbours. I’ve lived in poor housing estates in London, and they’re people like anyone else, trying to live a life of dignity most of them.. There is a lot of anger, apparently, on the states tonight, at the neglect and cost-cutting which it is felt (at the moment) led this disaster to happen.

RIP the victims, known and to be known.

Well done Scep for this post, I know this block of flats well. It was a terrible loss of life, and an absolute tragedy.

Not so well done though for politicising it before they’ve even counted the dead, in my humble opinion you could have waited a bit before politicising it, I find it rather distasteful. We don’t even know the cause of the fire yet. Maybe you can start a political thread about it, and keep this one for people to pay their respects to the dead.

I think you’ll find the tower is in Notting Hill / Holland Park not Kensington. Maybe you meant The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

May I ask which poor housing estates in London you have lived in? (please feel free to answer me in a private message to avoid clogging this thread up with London geography and politics)

The residents of Grenfell Tower had reportedly raised fire safety concerns for several years before the blaze that engulfed the block of flats in west London on Wednesday, according to a community action group.

The claim comes as London Fire Brigade said there had been a “number of fatalities” at the tower block.

Grenfell Tower in north Kensington was completed in 1974 in the brutalist style of the era, comprising 120 flats over 24 storeys.

It received a £10m refurbishment in 2015-16 with the work being carried out by Rydon Construction as part of a £67m borough wide regeneration project.

The firm said it was “shocked to hear of the devastating fire”, adding the work “met all required building control, fire regulation and health and safety standards”.

The tower is managed by Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

sometimes it needs Politics.. what a sad sad tale yet they closed the nearby fire station in the name of “cuts”. A footnote being a cheaply built Engilsh tower block,, that remains intact.. yet bomb free zones like the twin towers and surrounding areas AND the pentagon.. crumbled.. NO ??

and sod all to do with the finance they give Landlords.. et al..

Shocking Ruby. Not enough staff to deal with the survivors due to cuts. 5 fire appliances could not easily fit in the area outside the building although it is statuary. Hot water boilers fitted in already crowded corridors. Fireproofing removed between flats. Gas pipes fitted in the stairwell that were not boxed in and an area prone to vandalism. A platrom that can reach to the 17th floor was apparently in Surrey and worst of all the plastic cladding outside which gutted the entire building, just because it looked pretty and was cheap. It is political and this is what austerity looks like, or alternatively boxing the working class and poor in inferior mass housing.

Ruby, My Dear, I have no issues with this tragedy being politicised whatsoever, but as we learnt from the Manchester attack threads, maybe we should have kept the politics to a separate thread. This thread after all is named ” RIP The Victims of Grenfell Tower” yet it’s compromised in the opening post by politicising it. A friend of mine’s daughter was a survivor of this tragedy.

By politicising it in the opening post, makes Sceps condolences seem less sincere and heartfelt, and just looking for any excuse to go on a political rant. It’s a cheap shot, knowing people are less likely to challenge his politics on a RIP thread. I have a few political points I’d like to challenge Scep on already, but find it too distasteful and daren’t not do it on this thread.

Chief fire officers have warned that further budget cuts pose a risk to community safety as official figures revealed the biggest increase in fire deaths for a decade.

Their warning comes as MPs vote on Tuesday on a Labour move to block the takeover of the fire service by police and crime commissioners, who face election next month.

The latest figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that 294 people died in fires in England during 2015, an increase of 21% compared with the 242 deaths recorded in 2014 and the largest increase since figures were published in 2001-02.

    How awful!
My heart and prayers go out to those as well, and the families of those who lost any friends and love ones..

    Any survivors?

Asking only, so please do not think I am taking this awful event any different from what sadness you all feel.

When something of this multitude happens in a community like this and survivors displaced, are there agencies of some sort that find new homes and help out, provide food or clothing so not left out in the cold? Example we have “American Red Cross” station centers all through the u.s. one thing so wonderful always support seen of those of that community, surrounding ones, (If from area or not) come out with so much loving support in assisting those in a terrible time of need….

    Sorry again for everyone..

The whole community has rallied around the families Linda. Over 2 million in cash has already been raised and total strangers are making offers of accommodation.
