99.9 times it is Drac.
I think you are viewing this too simplisticly. Bullies usually target people who they thing are vunerable for some reason. Anything else (hair colour, clothing, ect) just provides the opertunity to start the abuse.
9 July, 2017 at 6:33 pm #1059830I don’t agree that everyone who commits suicide is “mentally ill” as firstly how would one quantify what is mentally ill or not. For eg if someone was terminally ill and in pain would them taking their own life qualify as being mentally ill simply because it was contrary to what was regarded by society as “normal behaviour”. To me it would be a logical albeit unorthodox step to take.
I didn’t say that everyone who commits sucide is mentally ill, only suicides that are ’caused’ by bullying. Or to phase it differently, someone with mental health issues is much more likely to commit suicide if they are bullied than someone who does not have the same issues.
He was also of an age where he brain was still developing so not sure a mental illness tag would ever be appropriate in this instance.
I’m really sure I understand why you think that children can’t suffer from mental health problems. Just because their brain is still developing doesn’t mean that there can’t be anything wrong with it. Many conditions, autism for example are usually diagnosed during childhood, and have symptoms that lessen into adulthood.
I’m not sure anyone can quantify what would be classified as a mental illness though as we are all on the spectrum of mental illness to some degree. For eg , a doctor living in a leafy suburb could attend church on a sunday morning to imbibe “the body of christ ” by way of a wafer. No one would classify that as abnormal or mentally ill but it’s a true act of madness in my eyes. Many young girls etc are obsessed over their looks as emotions are accentuated with brains that haven’t fully matured for eg. Taking an extreme example if an adult burst into tears at a cartoon not being on they would be committed as being mentally ill but no one would think that over a young child. Comparing adults and kids brains is like comparing apples and oranges- there’s a very good chance had this lad not killed himself he may have grown into an adult with no mental health issues outside what is regarded as ” the normal spectrum ” of behaviour. I don’t believe in medical labels attempting to pigeon hole our consciousness, everyone is on a sliding scale of behaviour but medicine likes to classify things for its own convenience .

9 July, 2017 at 6:37 pm #1059833Can you point out when you have been bullied many times on JC please Linda, I am genuinely curious because you have only typed on this site for a few months or less. I thought you said you worked in high profile academic jobs are highly qualified and have academic qualifications related to those jobs. How on earth is it possible for you to be bullied on a site like JC and then compare it to the bullying some children endure online?
Listen and believe … Or does the Duluth model only apply when it is convenient? (I wanted to bring up femminist critical theory in this thread too)
I have no idea why you are quoting an initiative that was introduced to tackle and that should be tackled, domestic violence. Is that your Ph.D head on, Doctor Drac.
I don’t believe Linda has experienced anything on this site, at all, not a bean, or anyone else for that matter, male or female, that compares to what this poor child endured and which led to him taking his own life. Linda made the direct comparison with him, not me. I do believe if she states she has been bullied on this site she is entitled to say so, should say so and my advice would be to report it and let the site authorities deal with it. Linda can’t follow your advice, because unfortunately you can’t block on JC boards.

I was simply exposing a hypocrisy in your position.

Respectfully disagree. Bullies dont actually need a reason….they just enjoy it. Simple as that.

You are welcome to disagree, but I don’t see a conflict between a bully enjoying what they do, and them deliberately targeting people who they think are vunerable.
Although I don’t think they do it for enjoyment, it’s usually to feel they are in control. Usually because some other aspect of their life is out of their control.

You haven’t exposed any “hypocrisy” in my position at all Doctor Drac. In one breathe you complain your words are personalized by others and in the next breathe personalize your own comments. Doh. Must be that Ph.D. Linda has experienced nothing on this site, on these boards, in full view, publicly aired, compared to what this poor lad endured. To suggest otherwise and you have, makes of total mockery of his death and the bullying that led to his death.

Asking Linda for evidence of abuse is directly contradictory to thinking the Duluth Model is a good thing, and that everything counts as violence against women.

I don’t need to ask Linda for any evidence, the evidence is publicly posted on the boards and she stated so. Linda compared her “bullying” on the JC boards directly to what this poor lad endured. No physical beatings, no death threats, no threats whatsoever, no intimidation at all. In fact no abuse specifically based on her gender at all either. OK Doctor Drac.
