a man has had countless tumbles whilst riding his horse, often causing him great pain, not to mention embarassment. however he never for one minute doubts his racing ability, and everyone considers him to be a consummate professional. How can this be?

Is it more correct to say ‘the herd of sheep is eating hay in the field’ or ‘the herd of sheep are eating hay in the field’?

a man owned an esquisite painting known to have been painted by a world famous 17th century Dutch painter. the painting was worth £500,000, yet the man deliberately destroyed it. Why?
