A festive topic for this time of year is always nice, I think.
So, with religion firmly in mind, should we respect credulous morons and their bizarre cults or should we feel free to openly mock a noble and spiritual quest with much to teach us?

Lord Almighty . . .
Isn’t it as simple as respecting the rights of all people regardless, unless of course it causes harm to others or a breach of the peace, in which case whether it is a right is questionable? Why would an intelligent person want to openly mock a noble and spiritual quest with much to teach us ?
I might suggest those that feel the urge to do so, lack the basic common sense to understand what may be considered noble to begin with. But perhaps if they were to learn what was to be taught, they may become” intelligent “.
All said and done, one mans meat is another’s poison. We are of course, all free to do as we choose, whether it is wise is again debateable and always consequential.
24 December, 2010 at 2:57 am #457737As the devil’s advocate, religion’s ridiculous, isn’t it? Why would you respect that sort of obvious nonsense or those that believe it? Why do these loons deserve special respect? Surely, we’d be better off with the rule that people can believe in what they want but that nobody has the right not to expect the piss ripped out of their madcap ideas.

Devil ? Special respect ?
Where on earth are you taking this Mr Pikey ?
24 December, 2010 at 3:21 am #457739I think I’m arguing for an expanded Church of England, The Temple Of Britain, that admits and nourishes any spiritually minded entrant willing to be the subject of a Just Temporal Majesty. Their councils would elect members to the House of Lords.

28 December, 2010 at 11:52 am #457741I’m an atheist, so to me the Christmas story is the ‘greatest lie ever told’!
As I get older I find I have less and less respect for religions.
I was reflecting on a photo of ‘druids’ celebrating the winter solstice at Stonehenge, in robes and stuff. First thought is that it all looked a bit silly and contrived. But are they any different from vicars dressing up in cassocks and putting little dry biscuits in peoples’ open mouths or Imams instructing people to kneel on mats facing Mecca five times a day?
Sorry if this is a bit strong, but some of us atheists have strong convictions about our lack of belief!
I accept that people need shrines and symbolism in their lives. Nothing wrong in that but their significance needs to be rooted in reality. I have a favourite place I walk to that has significance in my life, but I don’t surround it with lots of supernatural mumbo-jumbo. I just like being there because it brings back memories.
28 December, 2010 at 4:37 pm #457742God is English. It’s simple. His church is in England, isn’t it? The Church of England. The proper church. Not like those fake churches in the Vatican.
We don’t have natural disasters here because God doesn’t sh!t on his own doorstep.

Haha Henry VIII would be proud of ya Tom, if only for his church being recognised.
