if god doesnt exist when i die i’ve lost nothing by believing as i’m dead
That depends how far you take it. Many make a considerable loss. If you devote many hours days weeks months years of your life engrossed in it, reading scriptures, attending services, using significant expense, time, effort and energy,. I’d argue you”re better off putting it all into something different / better instead, to improve your quality of life in the here and now, such as a better job, education, healthcare, to live longer, to see your children and grandchildren get older, most of us would like a better car or house.

15 December, 2017 at 9:55 am #1082601Well, mister alfie, some people don’t just see life in terms of material wealth.
Getting a better life means more than increasing the larder and putting more cash into the moneypot even to many atheists.
I remember some black guy I worked with in a pub in hackney saying, that there’s got to be more than this.
I would say that once you’ve got the basics established – warmth, healthy food, a circle of friends (if you’re lucky in these times) – then you improve the quality of your life by rading literature whihc is better than the normal run of potboilers and romances; watching films and television (and plays if you can, which I can’t) which are more demanding (and more rewarding) than Game of Thrones or East Enders; and listening to music which requires more than having a weep or banging your head against an imaginary wall. Nothing wrong with the programmes and music etc; just that there is more than these.
For people who are not atheists, worship can actually be a rich addition to their lives, a strong contrast to the spiritually impoverished lives whihc they would lead without it. It’s a better quality to life.
This must be incomprehensible to people who can’t see beyond grabbing what they can from the shelves. And while some grab the super goodies, many can’t get the basics – that’s the nature of capitalism. We would all live a qualitatively better life when that is seen to.

I know, I could have actually told you that
Getting a better life means more than increasing the larder and putting more cash into the moneypot even to many atheists.
I know this too, and did tell you this in my post, when I mentioned
such as a better job, education, healthcare, to live longer, to see your children and grandchildren get older
These are basic needs not material wealth.
So Scep, you misunderstood me. Of course “to improve ones quality of life in the here and now” does not boil down to “material wealth”
I would rather pay for my poor and starving grandchildren to eat than go on another Hajj, wouldn’t you?
15 December, 2017 at 1:58 pm #1082607Alfie – the master of the non sequitur.
That is no answer to my post.
I was saying that a better quality of life involves more than the basic material wants, and that people with a faith who worship are not wasting their time – quite the contrary. That doesn’t mean denying your basic wants. Some people do that, because that’s how seriously they take their faith. Most take their faith seriously and still look after their basic wants, and that of their children.
Some people do neglect their children, of course, but so do non-religious people who take smoking dope, watching Jeremy Kyle, getting up when they feel like it even if it means that the kids are late for school etc etc more seriously. That’s to be condemned, but you don’t have to be a genius to recognise that it has to be condemned.
You don’t take any faith other than your atheism seriously, and f it’s impossible for you to imagine anyone with values different to yours, so you don’t see that worship can be as important as any other activity. If you believe in a Christian God, why are you wasting your time by worshipping him, reading scriptures, etc etc? That is the point I was trying to make.

Where does it say I’m an atheist? I think you’re running a little bit ahead of yourself now chap.
15 December, 2017 at 3:24 pm #1082614I think babble may be wrong, u did start a thread religion is like a penis? Think u have had some good points too. But u I have seen to reading posts have negativity for those who practice certain faiths.
Not at all disrespecting ur views. Merely reading observation, my opinion.
U flip back and forth, but your ground unsettled to me as to your beliefs for a moral, standard, guideline if u will.

Read Linda’s post. You may be an agnostic, but your support of Dawkins gave every indication of an atheist. Please correct me if my assumption is incorrect
And btw I think you’re trying to avoid my points, matey
16 December, 2017 at 12:19 am #1082633Wasn’t going to comment on this thread. I will say this though. The western concept of religion has growth only in 3rd world countries, much like tobacco, everywhere else, it is dying a slow death.
16 December, 2017 at 8:58 am #1082661It surely is in Europe and the UK, Gerry, but not in the USA (unfortuantely, given the type of religion that is flourishing there).
But wait..what is the western concept of religion? You mean Christianity?
