In an ideal world parrots would never have been imported by humans stuffed inside cardboard tubes so frightened that many died, we would not destroy their habitat, we would not kill them because some think they are pests, ignorant people wouldnt clip their wings taking away the only pleasure they have.
I do struggle sometimes with my conscience, but my pledge is to give my birds an environment as close to natural as possible, they are out more than they are in, and visitors have to be prepared to be dive-bombed and then kissed!
I help with arranging rescues up and down the country of birds brought on a whim, who when the owners get bored and maybe bitten dont want them anymore.
Some pluck themselves, some self mutilate. A lot of breeds should never be bred to be pets, and we campaign for this too.
Ive seen some stories that would bring the hardest-faced person to tears.
I try to educate and help people when they are looking for a pet bird, and encourage them to research as MUCH as possible before committing themselves to a pet which is expensive, very demanding, cant be left alone for long periods, requires special dietry needs, may never talk (the amount of people who buy parrots purely for that reason makes me very cross), may turn viscious, may possibly outlive their owner.
But in this topsy turvy world that we are hellbent on destroying I try and give them the bet I can, and will always strive to, and also to help others.
Pete, mynah birds dont make good pets, and I wouldnt recommend them to anybody looking for a pet.

18 October, 2008 at 2:06 pm #382612Shaz, I dont doubt for a second that your birds arent well cared for, and I know you let yours out a lot. Others arent as lucky to have someone like you as their owner. Some people have them on a whim, and soon the novelty wears off, and they spend the rest of their lives stuck in a corner of a room in a cage, and forgotten about.
18 October, 2008 at 4:11 pm #382613I know, and its the same with all pets. For a nation of supposed animal lovers, its quite shocking.
18 October, 2008 at 5:02 pm #382614Yeah, and its that time of the year again…when every tw.at on the planet has full access to explosives. Its already started around here, what with the muslim festivals going on. It wouldnt be so bad if “bonfire night” was just that…a night. But it starts in October and doesnt really stop until after new year. I really feel for pets who are banished to the garden, dogs, rabbits etc. People forget about them. It must be terrifying
18 October, 2008 at 5:18 pm #382615oh dont get me started on that. I think the law seriously needs changing… bonfire night should be official bonfires and fireworks only at organised events. The general public should not be able to buy them.
We have a huge event in the town park every year and up to this year it is always on 5 november…. now theyve gone and moved it to the sunday, which will only lead to folks still having their own events on 5 november… so it will be a whole fortnight of bangs and flashing lights.
Im not a killjoy, I love going to the bonfire and going on the fair, we meet up with friends every year, with our hipflasks of something to warm the coc.kles and have a great fun night.
I just hate them going off around residential areas what about the wildlife as well as pets?!
18 October, 2008 at 5:23 pm #382616sadly, the inconsiderate ba.stards dont think that way shaz. Its beyond me how people with rabbits in their gardens leave them out there while all this is going on. In fact, it really pi/sses me off that people leave rabbits out all through winter, and wonder why they die! for gods sake, keep them inside.
18 October, 2008 at 5:33 pm #382617people are thick.
I had a lovely rabbit when I was young, who lived in the house in winter and outside with a huge run in the summer.
I run around every bonfire night like a headless chicken trying to ensure the cats are in safely, I dont trust any of the littl runts around here not to attempt to hurt them.
18 October, 2008 at 5:41 pm #382618I had a pair of Budgies, the cage was for show, they only went in there for their food and water!
I wouldnt let them stay in a closed cage, I wouldnt like it so wouldnt do it to another animal.
Had a Rabbit, she was a house rabbit, Rabbit proofed the house and she used a litter tray.We did have the Gerbils, hamsters et al, but it distresses me to see animals caged. Also had Guinea Pigs, they did live in a hutch, but only at night for bed.
We dont have any animals now, we like to go away on a whim, you cant do that when you have animals
18 October, 2008 at 5:46 pm #382619I know Dawny, that’s why we havent had a holiday the last few years, but thats our choice and Im happy with that.
