Dublin is a fantastic city.. I love the history, the people and of course the bustling pub life (although the cost of a pint is bordering on the ridiculous  ) I hope to spend more time exploring Ireland. Rear Cross in County Tipperary is looking favourite for my next port of call.. 8)

Well.. it has been (and still is for many) a cause for much debate here since it was .. umm.. erected. It’s officially called The Spire , though most Dubliners call it The Spike (pronounced Spoike of course), and is quite a feat of construction and sculpture that has won many awards.

It’s curious reflective qualities can be quite beautiful, and in some way I suppose it symbolises a new, cosmopolitan, secular Ireland – whilst also placing the importance of Irish History into current aspirations.
The site on the main thoroughfare – O’Connell Street is just in front of the GPO (General Post Office), the headquarters for The Easter Rising of 1916, a monumental event in Irish History. It’s also where Nelson’s Pillar once stood, a symbol of British Rule that was blown up by the I.R.A. in 1966.
So, as I said, in many ways it represents a new aspirational Ireland.. surviving the nightmare of it’s past, yet signifying it’s importance.

    (Sorry, you asked 8-[ lol)
