Men are not like that now.One hopes there is never anything these days to match the Battle of the Somme because with modern weaponry the reults could be far worse to mankind than nigh on a hundred years ago

I know all wars are a waste of human life but the great war seemed to take it to a higher level.
I watched a documentary on you tube about the somme..it was made in 1976 by the bbc.
Those words stuck in my head.
I would recommend it if you have a spare hour.

Where we live in France was occupied during the Second World War and a lot of the older people are still far too traumatised to even talk about the horrific experiences they went through – for example Oradour-sur-Glane, and there were also concentration camps in this region
