even if they are not in the slightest bit racist…will never understand that feeling of being made to feel like a piece of dirt on their shoe just because of their colour

A quick follow up point, do you think that racist abuse is comparable to homophobic abuse? I definitely understand what that is like.

I have actually recieved ‘racist’ comments before, but I just laughed at them. Mostly because they were made under the assumption that I was Mexican, which i’m not.

Hope not. He’s just a doll for heavens sake, who happens to be black. Another question: would Golly cause offence if he was just called Golly?

I dont know the answer to that….we are discussing racial abuse connected with a black rag doll with an unacceptable part name which became a popular name to be thrown at a certain group of human beings and because of that the doll symbolised a negative

I don’t know the answer to that…I have no experience of it…..we are discussing racial abuse triggered from a black rag doll…with an unacceptable part name…and a doll which was likened to black people negatively

as for you laughing off the comments because the abusers thought you were Mexican….if you were Mexican would you have taken offence?…I don’t understand why its funny…abuse is abuse….I don’t laugh it off when I get called a Paki…and im indian……I don’t think Pakistani people deserve abuse therefore I don’t find it funny

    Florence Kate Upton

She would be turning in her grave, She created Golly.

It was Enid Blyton that cast him as a villain, now there was a racist if ever I saw one!

I was thinking more abstractly when I asked that question, abuse based on a characteristic you don’t consciously choose seems to be pretty much the same to me. The effect of the abuse is the same regardless if its because of race, sexuality or something else.

Also, I think there is an important distinction between “a doll being likened to black people negatively” and “black people being likened to a doll  negatively”.

as for you laughing off the comments because the abusers thought you were Mexican….if you were Mexican would you have taken offence?…I don’t understand why its funny…abuse is abuse….

I was laughing at the person who made the insult, he had clearly never seen someone from southern Europe before, and didn’t understand that a person speaking in an English accent probably didn’t live in America.

I don’t laugh it off when I get called a Paki…and im indian……I don’t think Pakistani people deserve abuse therefore I don’t find it funny

I have never understood why shortening ‘Pakistani’ to ‘Paki’ is viewed as racist, but when the same thing is done with ‘British’ to ‘Brit’ it is not racist. This goes back to my point about the intention of what is said, rather than a specific word that is used.

There are many valid criticisms of the country of Pakistan, and that is in part fault of the people who live there. If it is reasonable to assume a person’s values based on nationality is a difficult question.

I think it wrong to do so based only on their race, which I think is what you are describing.

Good point Draculina…..Pakistani shortened to Paki is insulting and racist….Shortening British to Brit isnt…Scottish to Scot….American to Yank…Someone from NZ to Kiwi. Mind you some Aussies call us poms for some strange reason. Never did see the insult in that myself.  Seems to me it all boils down to skin colour in the end. For the record I dont give two stuffs what anyone calls me. Water off a ducks back and all that.

Defendant thanks for the info about Golly. Never knew that. Interesting. Cheers.

That being said, do you actually have any evidence that golly was created to be a stereotype of black people? Because I haven’t been able to find any connection other than the skin colour.

If that is the only reason, then how is that different than saying The Hamburglar is a racist stereotype of white people?
