Not really. You see the link to The Thunderer that you post contains the paragraph,

He insisted, however, that very young children would not be given sexually explicit lessons. “We are not talking about five-year-olds being taught about sex . . . What we are talking about in Key Stage 1 [when children are aged 5 to 7] is children learning about themselves, their differences, their friendships, how to manage their feelings,” he said.

Not exactly how to put a condom on, is it?

    and not necessary either

Well, what’s he saying? Kids aged seven should be aware of being a boy or a girl and the differences between them, considering their friendships with other children and have learned not to hit people when they’re feeling angry or upset. It all seems perfectly reasonable. You did pass key stage one, didn’t you, Pete?

They should be left to be kids, given the literacy standards there are far more useful “lessons” kids can learn.
As for key stage one i left school well before 1988, try to hide your ignorance eh.

    Basically more like Biology/psychology..
Kids should be learning this kind of stuff from their parents too.

There are a few books out which explain some things, obviously in child – form.
Like Pete said, let them have their childhood.. It does pi ss me off when they’re forced to grow up, but we have to explain to them about being touched inapproriately, what’s right, and what’s wrong, and doing that with young children is a very delicate matter, (i suppose depending on them, their age, etc) – and that’s another reason as to why I think it should be coming from the parents first, rather than a teacher!

    Exactly, it’s the parents job

In year 6, my godaughters daughter, came home from school one afternoon with a letter for her parents, inviting her parents to go and view a video on sex education that the powers that be in the school, intended to show the children. Jo went along, with her husband and not because she’s a prude, far from it! but she was shocked to find that there were parts of the said video, that contained sado masochism. Now ok, fair enough, it was no more than people dressing up in leather and wearing collars and chains etc., but not the kind of thing that 10/11 year olds need to know! Jo refused to let her daughter watch it, she said that she would still be in school on the day, but that she’d prefer that she be sent to the library, there were several other parents who felt the same. The school superiors, in their infinite wisdom, decided that any children not allowed to watch said video, would be marked as absent!!! Were suddenly now not talking about a choice anymore! Jo stuck to her guns, she said if her daughter were going to be marked absent then she may as well be absent and she was kept off school.

I think theres something very wrong with the minds of the people who are suggesting this. We live in a world where peadophilia is rife! there are those i’d imagine, who would say its even more reason to inform our children. Personally, i’d sooner allow them to be children a little longer.

I think that’s wrong, stating that any children not present to watch it would be marked absent! IF you don’t want your child seeing that then fair enough! Hey – why not get the Chubby Brown videos out too, go for it.. Better still, get the teachers to dress up and explain role-play! (I’m being sacarstic by the way)!!

Hahahaha yea I realise it was sarcasm, no worries 8)

That was what I meant tho, they took away the choice by saying that any children not allowed to attend and watch it would be marked as absent, even though they were in school. There are some parents who would have been intimidated by this, Jo wasnt, it’d take a very brave man, or woman for that matter to try to intimidate her lol.

My daughter is 5, she knows there is a difference between sexes, she knows men have willies, women have fannies, that Daddies sperm fertlised Mummies egg, and that she grew in Mummies tummy. We have NEVER volunteered any info, just answered her questions honestly and simply.

As for schools teaching about sex, why not if it includes love and relationships, I agree it should be kept basic and simple, and bearing in mind we have a lot of underage sex, and mothers as young as 11, perhaps by being more open about sex, and feelings, and relationships we can prolong their childhood, take away the mystery of this thing that “grown- ups” only whisper about yet children openly discuss.

Exactly – if it’s kept basic and simple.. There’s no problem.
