    Hi!
Just because I can’t be bothered to shop around, when Orange anounced that they were doing away with Anytime and sent me a broadband kit I set it up. They said it would run up to 8mbps. However it’s been running 3 days and seems to have settled down to 2.2 mbps. Is this the best I’m liable to get, or is there anything I can do to speed it up more?

Orange emailed that the line would be tested over the next 10 days and that to speed the process up I should leave the “Livebox” on during that period. Not quite sure what they mean. I take it that the aforementioned box is the modem? If this is the case there could be a problem. I’m out most of the day and usually leave my PC on standby, but when I do this the lights on the modem go out. For various reasons it would be imposible to leave my machine running all day. Any suggestions out there?

The speed of your broadband is normally determined from the distance you are from your telephone exchange, Quality of the network (if cable) or just the condition of the cable and it’s route (overground/underground) and how many connections in the chain…..

Inside your line box there is another plug if you take the cover off you may find things improve if you plug into that directly

”upto” 8 meg is the careful wording used by any ISP

There are ways to get BT in to change the span from the pole to your house (I did it twice at my last two houses) however beware that your ISP is the customer to BT or the network your using and your the user (Contractual implications exist)

If your using a modem it may well not be able to cope with anymore than 2.2 meg (speedtouch or similar)

I use Orange and think they are quite good but I only use the free service included within a mobile phone contract

(That’s the jewish blood in me I am afraid)
