When I go onto the net my browser shuts down after about 5 mins then reloads, I am running win vista, have avg antivirus and spybot, can anyone tell me a cure for this as i dont want to reload vista, i have cleared alot of spyware off, all help appreciated.
13 July, 2008 at 11:41 pm #354113I read recently that there was an issue caused by Microsoft’s July Windows update for Vista that caused it to create a default on systems running Zone alarm and AVG.
Apparently they are bringing out a ”fix” for this shortly. I am not sure if this is the cause of your problem … but it may be worth an e-mail to Microsoft’s help desk.
13 July, 2008 at 11:56 pm #354114they do conflict, I got rid of zone alarm as it was shutting down my pc all the time, and I was running AVG at the same time.
14 July, 2008 at 5:12 am #354115Dunno if it’s the same thing you’re talking about but an Update from Microsoft totally zapped my Internet Connection.

14 July, 2008 at 9:40 am #354116Yes this is the thing I was talking about. For some (as yet unknown reason) the most recent Wundows Update alters the computer’s setting such that it creates a conflict with certainly Zone Alarm (and I think AVG) such that it’s operations are adversly affected.
I recall seeing that Microsoft are generating a work-around in the form of an update to the update (as it were) but this MAY not be available until the August release.
I do have issues with so-called ”free” anti-virus and firewall software. Whilst they perform a reasonably good job, there is no such thing as a free lunch.
My personal preference is for Kaspersky Internet Security which is inexpensive (around £25 or so depending on where you buy it) and auto updates every few hours or so. This means that the virus definitions are always fully current with regard to the latest infection that your computer might get.
It is a combined anti-virus; firewall; anti-spyware and privacy protector. I find it far quicker than Norton or McAfee, it uses less computer resources (RAM) to run, it is much more flexible both in it’s configuration and user frendliness, and it does a lot more than the others.
If anyone is interested in taking a look – here is the linky:

AVG or Avast coupled with the odd online scan gives results just as good as paid products.
Comodo is ranked in the top three of all Firewalls, free or otherwise. (although I’ve heard the pop-up’s are a nightmare)
CCleaner is also a Diamond which is the equal of any paid product in it’s genre.

I’ve always been inherently suspicious of “free” software – especially anti-virus & firewall software – on the cynical basis that the writer must get something out of it somewhere along the line and that “something” may well be to my detriment.
Usually freebies incorporate some kind of spyware and occasionally malware. Often they try to take over a function on your PC and set themselves up as a default option rather that a selectable option. It can be the very devil of a job to untangle things once they have taken over.
My gut feel is that with something as vital as a firewall of anti-virus, I want the comfort of knowing that my installation is as up to date as possible. With a paid for system, the provider is operating for commercial gain (or profit) and wants my renewal fee year on year. This to my mind is a great motivator as far as keping things up to date.
With the ‘freebies’, there’s nothing in it for them (so they say) and my experience is that you can’t really complain about something that is free if it fails in some way…………. although this does NOT stop JustChat users from moaning all day long !!!
14 July, 2008 at 6:48 pm #354119I had nothing but probs with free firewalls and anti virus from various suppliers, now I just use a Kaspersky suite, its cheap, saves any amount of hassle and it does what its supposed to, I wouldnt think of using free stuff again. :D
14 July, 2008 at 10:54 pm #354120I have One Care from Windows Live, yes Microsoft’s very own product.
I doubt if they’ll ever release a security update that would conflict with their own internet security suite.
It’s paid for and works like a dream, but the only question is, does Microsoft really need the revenue from my subscription? Should I spend my cash with a company that needs the money more?
Questions! Questions!
