I wonder if anyone has been following this?

A Premier league footballer has been granted an injunction against Twitter to reveal people who have twittered his name. Apparently there are hundreds of people who have used his name in relation to his affair with Imogen Thomas former Big Brother star.

The footballer and Fred the Shred (Fred Goodwin) are also seeking Gagging Orders against parliament so that their names cannot be mentioned in open session or be reported.

Gosh…..Not sure what I think of this. Should we have Gagging orders? Surely if someone lives in the public eye they should understand their life will be scrutinised and live it accordingly?

In future will people who can afford it be able to live a debauched life whilst seeming squeaky clean to the rest of us?… Hmmmm not sure i approve thinking of it like that.

    What do you think? :?

One last thing…does it mean if Twitter reveals the names of all these people and their identities…. Martin will have to do the same here if asked? Interesting huh? :-#

The rich and famous are able to obtain superinjuntions because they exist. Not sure I give 2 hoots either way to be honest. Sometimes when we hear of affairs or drug taking by celebrities it has no bearing on their constant rise to fame. Take David Beckham for instance. It probably very much depends on the popularity and likeability of the star, the stars that are not very popular will see their demise one way or another.
As for the footballer in question….I would imagine most know who he is now….he was pictured at a “do” a few days ago with his wife. All looked well for the cameras. She looked comfortable being seen in public with him. But he is a likeable fella, and the public don’t pay his wages unlike MP’s. When the similar stories come out about them it’s a different kettle of fish in that respect.
I fear gagging orders will not be scrapped but maybe slightly re-written therefore someone will find a loophole, be it the press, other countries where the law is different or the individual themselves.

I think if u stop gagging orders then there will just be something else to protect these cheating players.
I think a gagging order should protect both identities cos at the moment Immogen is getting all the cr ap while hes at home playing the dutiful Husband and Dad..just cos he has the money to pay for it.
    It takes two to tango!!
Although i read his name can be discreetly disclosed in another country..the injunction seems to be UK only.
I think i would send one of my good mates to Spain and let them loose there lol.

just cus hes a good footballer does that give us the right to know about his sex life
    i think not
would good would come of having his name revealed
non what so ever as far as i can see
its only going to hurt those close to him

and as for twitter i think the legal challenge really only relates to the fact that certain people who know the full story ie journalists who know they cant talk about it have used twitter to get round their bans which would suggest that they might be in contempt of court

now welshy and annette why is it your both so intrested in my sex life
ill get martin to gag you if you dont behave :P

No Taffy I don’t think it is. She was warned by the newpapers the story was going to print, just before the gagging order, the papers then often force people like Imogen to give their side. That’s exactly what happened to Faria Alam, my sisters friend. The woman who had an affair with Sven Goran Erikson. She has been played by the media I feel though…the papers knew even if the footballer got a gagging order the story would run for months and months just from Imogen alone. Think about it. Had his name been mentioned, and it out in the open, it would have been in papers for 2 Sundays in the NOTW then that’s it. Now its probably a global (ish) story, and as for him suing Twitter. Well, he must feel his identity is out now so he’s trying to make a point over his wasted thousands on the injunction. Will the law suit be kept private?

its all because she wanted to use it to make money out of it
    its all her fault
she should have kept her gob shut 8)

Injunctions or “gagging orders” as they are now called were originally intended to protect the vulnerable and/or protect public interests and rightly so. However I fail to see how a “celebrity” putting it about can then justify a gagging order…they live in the public eye and get paid handsomely for it, so they can’t then complain when the public want to know more about them (although tbh I couldn’t really give 2 hoots who is having it away with who). It is an abuse of the system and should be stopped.

The outcome of the case with Twitter will be interested, it may result in an overhaul of privacy laws that have become outdated in the digital age. It’s just an online version of gossiping over the garden fence after all
