RIP George Best x
my thoughts are with his family friends and fans
25 November, 2005 at 7:34 pm #158995Yes the press are cruel.
As his agent said no one can hurt him now, but no one hurt him as much as he hurt himself. Its very sad.25 November, 2005 at 9:34 pm #158996@morticia wrote:
I was actually quite sickened by the media hanging around outside the hospital waiting for him to die.
Really turned by stomach, sick vultures.
Then on the news last night…….George Best nearly dead…..ffs !
Irrelevent of what anyone feels about GB, what I saw on TV last night with 40 odd news/media crews loitering outside the hospital will stick in my brain for a bit.
they were there because he is or was one of the most famous sportsmen the world has ever known
he’s right up there with ali, pele etc in terms of recognition
he was flawed to say the least
but you only have to listen to the people that actually knew him to realise how very lovable he must have been
very childlike, a victim of his genius
RIP you crazy diamond25 November, 2005 at 9:44 pm #158997A Very Sad day..
A huge loss for the world of football, for these islands culturally, and of course – most significantly – for his family and friends.George Best was an icon. A footballing wizard. A genius and innovator. In my opinion he is the greatest footballer that ever lived.
Seeing and hearing all the tributes paid to him this evening from across the footballing spectrum brought a tear to my eye. For the impact of this massive talent not only banished many a divide in the field of sport, but also crossed the most bitterest of barriers within his native homeland.
I recall growing up in Dublin in the early to mid-seventies, kicking a ball about… Every young lad wanted to be George Best.. the lad born on “the other side” as it were. The East Belfast boy who wryly confessed to throwing stones at Catholics as a youngster… So what? Nobody cared! “Georgie” was The Man :)A curious hybrid of ultra-confidence yet at times polite reserve.. his many instances of self deprecating Irish wit were a joy to behold. Sky Sports News put together a lovely little montage of such nuggets this evening.. and one that stands out was George’s defence of Video Evidence in football matches.. They say people won’t stand for video evidence, but they also said people wouldn’t stand for all-seater stadiums or words to that effect  …. Classic.
The ugly side was of course there for all to see. The tragic self destruction and the utter devastation of those near and dear that too frequently preys on the lives of extraordinary talent. The wasteful alcoholic disease that led to his cry of “I’m so sorry I just can’t help myself”… and quite understandably to tears of pity and howls of indignation in equal measure from many.
I certainly echo the sentiment of hope that he finds the peace now in Rest that was rarely found in life.

RIP you crazy diamondIrrelevent [but not disagreeing with you].
It was the sight of seeing all those “journo’s” hanging round a hospital waiting for a man to die. The news reports the night before that Best didn’t have long to live……..as if they were just waiting for a “news just in…….” story.
Not particularly a sign of respect for a dying man is it ?
I grew up with my dad following Best [he’s also a Man U follower #-o  ], so I think I can understand the impact he must have a hell of a lot of people.
25 November, 2005 at 10:32 pm #158999I dont know what’s so wrong with it to b honest. The man lived his life in the public eye. He’d have been used to it. It’s not as if they were in the hospital room or anything. They were standing outside. It was obvious the man didnt have long to live. They were just doing the jobs that they’re paid to do.
25 November, 2005 at 10:36 pm #159000The thing that sickens me the most about this all is the fact that they are all flocking because the greatest british footballer alive was dieing.
If it had been your average joe blogs who was loveable most of the time and really good at his job but still an alcoholic wife beater nobody would have given him the time of day.
But because he was great 30(ish) years ago they love him, he was still an alcoholic wife beater which i do not condone under any circumstances. Fair play he was a great football player, but surely that does wipe away all of his hirendous sins.
Enough of me griping about it, shall not speak ill of the dead.
I hope the press leave his family and friends in peace now to allow them time to mourn.
RIP George, You was the best of the best and at times the worst of the worst, may you find contentment and happiness where ever you are now
25 November, 2005 at 10:57 pm #159001i think your missing the enormity of the man
he’s akin to royalty
a genius that was adored warts and all worldwide25 November, 2005 at 11:16 pm #159002Yeah. He was a maverick. He was so pi.ssed in the 70’s he actaully signed for Hibs. Not only did he not turn up for training, he didnt turn up for a few games lol because he’d been out on a bender all week.
All the quotes from the players who played with him up here have described a kindly friendly man. There’s no condoning hitting his wife, but his good points and what a sublime footballer he was shouldent b forgotten.26 November, 2005 at 2:10 pm #159003or the twice he got done for drink drivin
