Lotte Lenya, later the star of the James Bond movie From Russia With Love (she wears the shoes with knives attached to them), was a young prostitute picked up from the back streets of Weimar Berlin to star in the Threepenny Opera.
Here she plays Jenny Towler the barmaid who waits on the lecherous, drunken men while dreaming of a ship (almost certainly the USSR, it’s how Brecht saw Russia in those days) which will come to mete out revenge for her. Class war was class war in Weimar, pre-Hitler Germany.
Note the strange, impassive hardness of the face in the closeups – almost as if she were a prostitute from the back streets of Weimar Berlin.
Oh, she actually was a Weimar prostitute before being picked by Brecht for the part).
er warning to philistines – the film is from 1931

Leonard Cohen’s The Partisan
with photographs of the French Resistance, some of them not nice. look at the faces carefully.
And, like, play it up LOUD.

3 July, 2017 at 6:57 pm #1058680Yep good song Sceptical made all the more vivid by the picture commentary.
A random tale. My Irish father and his two older brothers were sent to ‘reform’ school for stealing bread from the local bakery. At 15 he joined the Merchant Navy. In his twenties he applied to join the British Army, which was refused, he petitioned the Queen, unheard of in those days. Joined the Parachute Regiment. Served in Ulster where hard men fought hard battles and respected each other, despite the mutual hatred. Served 22 years and when he retired took a lump some rather than a full pension to buy a house. Lost the house in Thatchers recession.
I was never political as a kid, at least not consciously and limited education later in life awakened my class consciousness, I never discussed anything with my father and didn’t speak to him from the day I left home for the last time. A hard man who had a hard life. Now though, with hindsight, I wish I had, what tales he had and what a life he led.
Class war, all around us and permeates within every single aspect of our society today.

3 July, 2017 at 9:15 pm #1058698Another great political song from pre-Hitler Germany.
Macheath – Hitler himself – Mackie Messer – Mack the Knife.
This guy is everywhere – some would see him appear on these threads occasionally, but they must be paranoid.
A poor widow wakes up raped, but who could it be? mackie, what was the price?
Seven kids burned alive in a jerry-built tower (connect??). It couldn’t be Mackie – nobody asks him, he’s nowhere at the scene, nowhere to be found. Must be someone else.
The same 1931 movie – with English subtitles, with the fate of Jenny Towler (pirate Jenny) revealed.
3 July, 2017 at 10:34 pm #1058704Behan, publicly accused Bob Dylan of plagiarizing “The Patriot Game” in writing his own ” with god on our side” Behan also wrote ” Liverpool Lou ” not keen on his version.
