How hard is it to criticise a poet?

an intelligent discussion in that link, Pepperpot.

A poem without rhythm isn’t a poem; like a dance without rhythm isn’t a dance.

Mellow, nobody here can control a thread, even one they start; rather than blowing up, write a poem (with rhythm?) and start the ball rolling –

Well. I’m not a particular lover of poetry, so therefore know nothing about how it “should” be done….. But I do know I have enjoyed reading the poems Mellow has posted- So I say CARRY ON.

What does it matter if it isn’t done the right way fgs  …. I think it was nice that Mellow decided to share them with us here .

It’s only as message board ! [-X This thread has put me in mind of Martin who was jumped on as soon as he posted something that others thought he shouldn’t …Dear oh Dear …no wonder people have stopped posting

I smell scapegoating…Mr and Mrs Smear at work?

Nobody can or should stop others posting…sometimes we don’t like what someone says, but that’s part of chat and these boards…I’ve had trolls, and I’ve been critical of some of the people who’ve posted here, but I have never harassed anyone or stopped anyone writing verse..I’ve not criticised any single poem here, and neither has anybody else..

as I have said twice now, post away. People are free to say how wonderful these poems are. And people are free to say how they don’t like them. Nothing bad at all has been said by Jen, myself or Sgt Pepper. Stop whining and scapegoating, post your poems, or don’t post. Simple..for some.

I refuse to spoil this thread further …….. But I will say this …

How sanctimonious you are! [-X

This is a poetry thread, one that I looked forward to, not one for people having a go at one another.

A thread for poems, and in my view for poetry to be discussed in a constructive fashion, encouraging and critical.

None of the critics have descended into obscenities or smearing.

Let’s keep it to poetry, please.

I’ve seen no evidence that Jen, myself or Sgt Pepper (and all three of us love poetry, I believe) are putting people off, but If it’s felt that criticism puts poets off (!!) then I’ve said I’ll keep quiet. What more is demanded?

    So

post poems, or end the thread because there are no more poems to be posted, a genuine shame if so…nothing complicated about that, unless you’re not really interested in poetry.

    Well i really don’t know…..
you leave for a few days and…
some kind of poetry troll does see fit to…
well sees fit to TROLL a pleasant and
gentle thread of simple poems and
    quiet contemplation of simple means.

This is not a thread for any budding or wannabe Poet Laureate
it is quite simply a place for simple poems to hopefully create a
pleasant ambience for simple enjoyment for anyone who does
see fit to stumble upon aforementioned simple thread.

That is about as pleasant and simple as i can put into words the
reason for this thread and me being rather reserved that is as simple
as it does get to explain to any budding troll.

I hope more people do decide to add to the thread and in so doing
will add to the simplicity and pleasant nature for what the thread
    was intended for.

    Here endeth the lesson.

Maybe some missed this post- I think it says it all. ^^^^^^^

I Enjoyed reading the poems … I certainly didn’t feel the need to engage is criticism about any of them ….. Just someone posting his/ her Poetry, why the need to discuss it , or rather pick holes in it , is beyond me.

I repeat ………….No wonder people have stopped posting like they used to.

    Poetry please!!! constructive criticism included.

If you only want people to say your poetry is lovely then only show it to those that you think will say that, but then don’t expect your poetry writing skills to improve either.

If, however, you choose to put your poetry in the public domain then you must expect some to point out where there is room for improvement…constructive criticism. That does not make someone a troll, it makes them someone who cares enough to want to give input. If you choose to ignore it, that is your choice. If such feedback hurts too deeply then maybe you are better off not putting it in the public domain. Or maybe you need to put a statement at the end along the lines of you do not want any feedback, in which case I would ask why are you sharing it?

And if people have stopped posting as they used to in case someone might disagree with them, well quite frankly they need to grow a thicker skin, it’s a big bad world out there.

I would welcome more poetry but I reserve the right to not say how wonderful it is if I don’t feel that way.
