I recall in school meeting several foreign exchange students over the years from all over. One was from Oslo Norway. One from Paris, One from England not recall where from, and one from Australia. They stayed a year with us in a home which was offered by another family. How truly excited they were as we were to have them..
Shared so many things and went back home, addresses exchanged and the thin paper offered for mailing over seas no longer used, needed to be used back then. Postage stamp way cheaper than now.
Sitting down took a great deal of thought. Pen to paper. Conversations of interest, things liked or doing. Vacations so forth.. But it also involved committed relationships across the seas and continuance of that bond. How truthful we were, how serious in sharing good or bad times. No fears others may be disappointed in us or expect more from us then whom we are. For 3 spent about 6 years writing faithfully..Sadly life got busy.. Connections got lost. For one we had a 25 year relationship and when we both moved about we too got lost from each other.. Address changes so forth.
With social media these days it allows us this wonderful ability to reach out, discuss and meet strangers, converse on basically life, share.
What I find perplexing often, in a letter which takes longer to receive, well things take longer to express difficult times, sadness, loss of hope, so forth. You hold that piece of paper in hand..Really take to heart, feel bad, and continue on, hoping things will get better, changes made.
In social media every thing can spin so fast that makes your head spin too.. is there no real people who just want to be honest, express, expose, share with out being feared retaliated against not accepted for what they are..not perfect in any sense just human. How truly sad..
Think paper pen pal better. May take awhile for mail to arrive, but in long run it is between you and other person and not all at once.. I will stick to paper and mail.

I got excited about having international pen pals when I was 12, but never kept up with them.
My sister had a US pen pal and kept up with her longer, but sadly these things pass.
People change, evolve.
But the cruelty associated with social media was absent.
There has always been cruelty sceppers…even in yer case but sadly…old folks blame social media for it cause they think they’re some thing different but you have to under stand…the word cruelty came in the dictionary a long time before Social Media…so due to my own reasoning, I think yer either taking the piss or making excuses…….
I have come to the conclusion that you are taking and making both but hey, who am I if you wanna lecture me?…..
