my first bulldog had entropic eye……..she needed 2 ops….this condition is hereditary..her mother and father shouldnt have been mated but were. and we paid a grand not knowing we could never show her ourselves at small dog shows.
my reef was bred by a breeder who has been in the business 40 yrs and has judged all over the world. he refuses inline breeding if he has a dog with faults.
most backyard breeders are in it for the money alone.what annoyed us was our first bully albeit bought as a pet only.had too have both her eyes operated on and the vet looked at us like we were to blame. that was years ago and after meeting and showing reef with other breeders and showers u learn the pitfalls.
I am not here for an argument but I have been on the wrong end of KC’s Bulldog council (I have been led to believe it’s the most powerful breed council in the Kennel Club) pureley for having an oppinion on the state of the kennel club bulldog.
I have for the last few years been involved in a breeding programme that is recreating the bulldog of old as illustrated during the mentioned TV programme.
I have been accused of breeding mutts and all sorts but I can hold my head high as I can honestly say 75 – 80% of the inherited bulldog health problems they suffer from have been rectified . All the dogs used in the programme have been the healthiest specimens that could be found.“Our goal is to produce a national bulldogge, a dog which is brought out into the show or ring with pride, to stand besides your dog knowing that he is an athlete, capable of non-stop energy, worthy of the name gladiator, a true bulldog both in appearance and traditional bulldog temperament.
Not a nuisance around animals and other dogs, but with an in-bred fire if needed, or called upon, a dog that would grace the arena of any show in any country any where in the world, and be gazed upon with true spirit and real national pride, not shown amongst the fruit and veg in a wheel barrow like the kc dogs of today.” (Taken from our Breed Standard)Some of us are trying to do the right thing and correct the mistakes others have made either accidently or on purpose. I have had several litters and have not had any c section and all matings have been natural.

21 August, 2008 at 5:17 pm #364910Of course inbreeding causes genetic problems.. and of course all pedigree dogs are inbred. In the progamme it pointed out that it is common to mate siblings or father to daughter. Most pedigrees can trace their ancesters back to just a few dogs. They did say that the problem had become so severe now that infertility is becoming much more common. They are breeding the dogs out of existence! Nature will always find a way to reassert common sense.
21 August, 2008 at 5:40 pm #364911The programme has to be the most disturbing I have ever watched on tv………..it makes me wonder if the same could happen to pedigree cats too.

Not all of us in-breed, If you know what to look for you can tell. Most KC dogs are in-breed but if you get the chance to look at photos of the Dorset Olde Tyme Bulldogge you will notice the big variation in size , Height, wieght, etc that you won’t see in the kennel club bulldog. We make take longer in getting the final product but in the long term the health issues will be minimal.
