The passing of a true cinema legend  .
Paul Newman made an indelible mark on the film world – classics such as BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, THE STING and THE HUSTLER.. the iconic COOL HAND LUKE , the groundbreaking SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME and later roles such as his oscar winning performance in THE COLOUR OF MONEY and wonderful turn in THE ROAD TO PERDITION all stand out.

His humanitarian work over the years strikes a significant personal chord in relation to the Barretstown project he pioneered here in Ireland.

    God, be good to him.

I agree wholeheartedly. He spent a larg part of his life quietly giving help and succour to those that needed it most. Didn’t make a big production about it …. he just got on and helped others.

A fine man and one whose memory will remain with lots of people for a long long time.

It was a shock to me.
Ever since I was a kid I was proud to share the same birthday as him.

I love that line in Cool Hand Luke when the prison commandante says: “What we have here is failure to communicate” in an extraordinary Southern accent – it made the whole film for me.

Oh and the fantastic song that “Luke” sings to himself when he learns of his mother’s death

“Don’t care if it rains or freezes, got myself a plastic Jusus, hanging on the dasboard of my car ……” etc

Incredibly moving – what a talent the man had.
