I find it strange Newspeak that you onl chose topost yesterday and only one post regarding th Peter Sutcliffe case, and how did you know about the press release, and who is it being released to, as it is not public knowledge. Do you want me to contact one of the papers that ran our story to confirm it, because that can be done quite easily.

    #303814

I have contacted people to ask whether the story is true about him receiving a payout, and all of them say that it is indeed true.

Well butterflyangel – you may need to re-contact ”people” again because this story is total bollocks!

    Here is why:

I was intrigued by this post and the underlying facts behind it (why should Peter Sutcliffe get £196,000 … unfairness … etc etc) so I telephoned the contact provided in the press release yeaterday and very kindly provided by a new member – Newspeak – which you find linked to on page 2 of this thread.

I telephoned the number quoted in the press release and spoke to a guy called Rory Hegarty who is the acting director of communications for Broadmoor Hospital – where Peter Sutcliffe resides. (The number is his direct line BTW butterflyangel if you want to call him to verify this).

He told me the original story appeared in the Sunday Mirror in March 2005 ….. yes that’s right – 2005!!! He doesn’t know where it came from, or who fed this to the Media, but assured me that it is total and complete rubbish. Sutcliffe was not paid and never has been paid any amount in compensation by the NHS – for anything, much less some sort of alleged injury.

However, it made such a good story and aroused so much indignation (amongst self-righteous Sun readers etc etc) that it has been repeated in papers etc all over the world as if it was gospel truth. It has apparently even appeared in papers as far away as India.

Why this story re-appeared on Boxing Day 2007 is anybody’s guess – but it doesn’t alter the basic fact that it is a total invention, however many times it is repeated.

Rory is pretty frustrated by it all as the Media don’t seem to want to print a retraction. Why should they? After all they have recycled a fake story some 2 1/2 years later on and got another circulation boost out of it. Printing a retraction and thereby admitting that they were ”had” is hardly good publicity for them is it?

Moral of this tale is: Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Finally …… butterflyangel – I suggest that you call Rory yourself (I’m sure he would be delighted to take your call) and check this out for your own peace of mind. After all if you are basing your ”claim” on the apparent unfairness of Sutcliffe getting £196,000 and it never actually happened, you might find that your own case in somewhat undermined.

if this story is true then why hasn’t it been sent to the press, and why haven’t the press put a retraction in, they cant afford to state something like that and leave it. That would be libel and it would also be bad for the paper to print something untrue. Also if it was true, wouldn’t they have contacted us via Broadmoor and sent a letter to us with the letter head of the HM Prison. Sit back and think about that because a lot of things dont seem to make sense. Like the words press release are blue as if to link you up to the paper where it was printed, but there is nothing, which seems strange to me.

    Hi Butterflyangel,

First of all, can I just say how terribly sad your partner’s case is? What a tragedy for the NHS to lose a committed paramedic like that. No one should have to encounter violence and risk permenant disability in their line of work. I’m appalled by the compensation he’s been offered – it’s an insult! As you say, your partner has to totally rethink his whole life thanks to these thugs.

However, I do suspect that it’s untrue that Peter Sutcliffe has received any compensation payment, never mind one so large. I injured my leg badly back in 2002 and was awarded £6.5k for a permenant injury. Since then, I’ve kept my eye on compensation payments generally, and the level of payments in this country is really lousy.

If you doubt the authenticity of the press release, you could go directly through Broadmoor’s switchboard and ask to speak the Head of Communications (or whoever is named on the press release). If they have never heard of him, you’ll know it’s fake.

Have you looked into what kind of payments other people have received for similar injuries? I know it’s tempting to compare Nick with Peter Sutcliffe but maybe it would be more prudent to use actual stats provided by the courts rather than the tabloids. Unfortunately, it can take a long time for them to put right their errors, and can be very costly to challenge each and every incorrect report – not the best use of NHS funds.

Call Broadmoor, at least then you’ll know one way or the other.

Good luck in getting more money too, I hope you and your family have a very happy future.

OK butterflyangel, to check this out for yourself you can do the following things:

    1. Go to the West London Mental Health NHS Trust press release page (link is here>>> http://www.wlmht.nhs.uk/news/press_releases.html ) This contains an archive of press releases over the last year or so. Right at the top is yesterday’s press release on this fake Peter Sutcliffe story. Check it out for yourself – you will see that it is identical to the one posted yesterday by “Newspeak” on page 2 of this thread.

    2. Don’t believe the NHS home page because its bound to be fake isn’t it??? – telephone Rory Hegarty yourself and speak to him. I did. He is a really nice guy and very helpful. He is as concerned as others are at this fake story and the anger it has aroused in some people.

To assit you, his direct line is 01344-754043 and the switchboard number is 020-8483-2075 (all contained in the press release and therefore already in the public domain). Rory is based at Broadmoor Hospital, Crowthorne, Berks and the West London Mental Health NHS Trust is based at St Bernard’s Hospital, Uxbridge Road, Southall, Middlesex – telephone switchboard number is: 0208-354-8354.

Instead of fighting this …. why not make the calls yourself, as I have, and check it out.

As to why the Press haven’t printed anything yet. Well remember that this press release was only sent out yesterday (21st January) and it is hardly ”hot news” is it? My guess is that the press won’t ever print anything by way of a retraction as to do so would mean admitting that they got it totally and utterly wrong.

As I said above “Why let the facts get in the way of a good story”. They’ve had their ‘fun’ and got their reader’s interest – no way are they going to then admit that the entire thing is a total hoax.

You really ought to re-consider the basis of your claim as basing it on an alleged payment to Peter Sutcliffe (which we now know never ever actually happened) is going to undermine your entire case for increased compensation.

Have you got nothing better to do. Would major tabloids, radio stations and MP’s put their jobs on the line. I think it’s you who cannot see what is obviously a hoax. None of the so-called press release makes sense. If you look at it properly there are no links to go to, it just looks like a mocked up Word document that anybody with any computer knowledge could do. Let this lie, and let us get on with what we are doing.

Butterflyangel, I hoped my post would get across how sympathetic I feel to you and your family. I hoped to point you in the right direction of getting more compensation, because at the moment your appeal has gone off track in my opinion and you risk undermining it. I suggest you call Broadmoor or ask your lawyer to do so and attempt to establish the truth.

I won’t say any more, and this is obviously causing you extra hurt, I just think you deserve to know the truth. I hope you get to the bottom of this.

Once more, good luck to your family.

Butterflyangel – you really would be best advised to take note of what ”Lala” has written (and ”Newspeak” as well). They are both trying to help you – not hinder you.

I can quite understand that you feel upset at the news that was posted (about the Sutcliffe story being a hoax), particularly as you are clearly deeply emotionally involved with your fiance’s problems – and quite rightly so.

Let me ask you to think about this. If the NHS website I pointed to to WAS a hoax site – it is an enormous site with loads of information and links etc etc and very professionally put together. (Check it out here>>> http://www.wlmht.nhs.uk/index.html <<< this is the home page). You can do a WHOIS lookup and see that the URL is actually registered to the NHS. To set up a hoax site this big is out of all proportion to trying to mislead you. The site is a REAL site and the press release posted on it is a REAL press release.

Why not make one simple telephone call to Broadmoor Hospital and talk to Rory – as I’ve said he is really most helpful and a really nice guy. Put your mind at rest once and for all then you can set about finding ways of resolving the compensation issues for your fiance.
