Butterflyangel, I am sure that everybody is totally behind you in your quest for a fair compensation award for Nick.

Just a thought. Remember it is a lot easier for politicians to make arrangements for Nick to receive specialist training and preferential access to training facilities than it is for them to cough up MORE money.

With the use of their influence they gain good personal PR for helping you and being seen (by the voters) to have done so – and you gain the training that Nick wants and needs to fulfil his nursing ambitions. This is a WIN : WIN situation.

If they have to give MORE money, the clear implication is that the previous amount wasn’t enough and they may feel somehow to blame for this. Bad PR for them and it doesn’t play well with the voters. This is more WIN : LOSE.

Also MORE money may be seen to set a precedent and the Civil Servants will undoubtedly advise caution at the least. Using ‘influence’ can be portrayed as a one off special circumstance and not having an affect on any other cases. This will be seen as the safer option

So my advice is to always try to get the assistance you want through the use of ‘influence’ rather than the money.

I’m not sure how that relates to the last post, but the nursing training is free, but Nick has to give up work to do the training because it is a demanding course, and because he would have to give up work for 3 years he needs an amount that would enable him to live and provide security for himself and his young family. That is the point that needs to be put across.

I understood that. However it is a lot easier for rules to be bent in order for a grant (for example) to be arranged than it is to fix a larger cash financial award – particularly with the CICA involved.

It may well be possible for Nick to be awarded some sort of support grant to defray his living etc costs – the money for this could be found in an obscure support budget. I deal with this stuff all the time through my own Local Authority for SEN support grants. The money is never available unless and until the administration is prodded into waiving restrictions and suddenly they ”find” the funds.

A couple of months ago we ”found” an additional £140,000 out of part of the Education deferred capital budget to support a paraplegic child with her SEN educational transport needs. With the right support (i.e. ‘influence’) these things can always be done.

I hope that we get something good out of this and all our hard work will not have been in vain. I cannot say how grateful we all are for all of your help. Nick and I are overwhelmed by the response

firstly I’m very sorry to hear about the attack and the terrible injuries.

Regarding the Yorkshire Ripper, he’s likely to remain in a high security mental institutiuon until he dies. A big sum of money would be of little use to him.
